Ahmedabad being a centre for commerce, has traditionally had a large population of Vanias (or traders), belonging to the Vaishnav and Jain sects of Hinduism.
According to the 2001 census, 84.62% of the population in Ahmedabad is Hindu, 2.92% Jain, 11.4% Muslim and 0.72% Christian.
Ahmedabad has a second cricket stadium at the Sports Club of Gujarat which is owned by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, which as the home ground of the Gujarat cricket team is the venue for domestic tournaments such as the Ranji Trophy, the Duleep Trophy and many inter-school and collegiate tournaments.

AHMEDABAD: Parents of a five-month-old girl have filed a complaint in the Consumer Education and Research Society (CERS) alleging medical negligence left a severe burn mark on their daughter when she was just a few hours old.
Satish Arnold, a local resident, in a written complaint filed with the CERS, alleged that his daughter, Deepa, has sustained severe burns on her left thigh during the heat-treatment that was given to her on March 17 after she was delivered 34 weeks pre-mature and low-birth weight at the Samarpan Maternity Hospital, Thaltej.
Taking a serious view of the fact that "recently constructed multi-storey buildings collapsed in different parts of the state, especially Ahmedabad, which is 400 km from the epicentre", the NHRC asked the state government to "look at building by-laws, update them, and, most importantly, ensure proper implementation of the building by-laws".

CHL has picked up 100 per cent stake in Alpharma France through Zydus International Pvt Ltd, an overseas wholly owned subsidiary of Cadila Healthcare Ltd. The deal which was in the making for the past three-four days was finally frozen on Wednesday in Paris by CHL chairman and managing director Pankaj Patel.
While Alpharma’s global human generic pharmaceutical business is understood to generate revenues of around $1 billion in key markets in over 60 countries, its animal health business brings in sales of around $300 million from over 50 countries.
