Topic: Ahmet Cosar

In the News (Sun 27 May 12)

Serdar Argic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the Serdar Argic phenomenon it was widely believed that the person responsible for the posting was Ahmet Cosar, who at the time was a graduate student in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Minnesota.
Many believed that Cosar was also responsible for the posts of Hasan Mutlu, another extremely active poster of Turkish nationalist beliefs whose last Usenet post had come one day after Serdar Argic's first (September 1/August 31 1992).
A post on Slashdot of early April, 2001 (post ID 1617212, comment ID 141, now disappeared) claimed that Cosar had connections to the Turkish secret police and had to cancel his spamming activities after his visa for the USA was revoked.

Cosar is also reported to have sometimes posted under the names Coras or Koras, which maybe are supposed to sound Greek (but maybe these are forgeries) and has posted information about Turkish fonts.
Cosar is no longer registered as a student, nor does he show up at his office, so the phone number above doesn't reach anyone.
Cosar is a fervent Turkish Nationalist and a supporter of Hamas, which he claimed to me over the phone was a defense organisation created to keep the Israelis from genociding the Palestinians.

Le Merde added that up to 1992, Cosar operated out of tygra.michigan.com, but escaped from the country when Bullshit bikers entered the city.
Cosar was dead of wounds suffered during a mailbombing by bdb@becker.gts.org, although it is generally believed that the mysterious leader is alive and well and presently is residing alternately in Fuckersville, Bullshitia, and Zuma, Stupidia.

To back the Cosar-is-Argic theory, Argicologists point to a March 22, 1994, post where Cosar (probably by mistake) uses the Argic account to post a personal reply.
He signs it "Ahmet Cosar." Others think the Argic-entity is a "bot" -- an "artificial intelligence" that greps (searches) select newsgroups for buzzwords (like "Turkey" or "Greece") and responds.
Or Cosar left the University of Minnesota (voluntarily or otherwise), thus losing access to the paper's computer.

"Serdar Argic." Cosar's infamous alter-ego was responsible for ruining many history-related and culture-related new sgroups such as soc.history and soc.culture.turkish; Cosar liked to post lengthy rants about one of his pet delusions, namely, that in 1914, Armenians had killed all the Turks in northeastern Turkey and in Russian Armenia.
Furr created alt.fan.serdar-argic to give people who were sick of Cosar's childish pranks a place to comment and discuss what to do about Cosar.
Oddly enough, and no doubt to the immense surprise of Cosar, the newsgroup has actually seen considerable use from time to time.

Together with Ahmed Cosar (also spelled, at the times, as Koras), Mutlu unleashed on the Usenet the force of political auto-posting AI program which has no equals even now (5 years since).
Mutlu is a software engineer of some repute with background in Turkish Armed Forces, then employed at AT&T Bell Labs, and Cosar was a graduate student (tenured by now, I presume).
The program they wrote was quite funny in a way it screwed people's names and generated insults.
