During the early 2000s, Leka Zogu was active in the country's politics, characterizing the socialist government (which was derived for the most part from former communist party officials) as "mafiosi" with little expertise.

Zogu was succeeded briefly by his father-in-law, Shefqet Verlaci, and by the liberal politician Ilias Vrioni; Noli was named prime minister and regent on July 17, 1924.
Despite his efforts to reform the country, Noli's "Twenty Point Program" was unpopular, and his government was overthrown by groups loyal to Zogu on Christmas eve of that year.
He moved back to the United States in 1932 and formed a republican opposition to Zogu, who had since proclaimed himself King Zog I. Over the next years, he continued his education, studying and later teaching Byzantine music, and continued developing and promoting the autocephalic Albanian Orthodox Church he had helped to found.

Opposition to Zogu was manifested in a series of narrowly based antigovernment uprisings in 1925, 1926, 1935, 1936, and 1937.
Noli's opposition ended by the mid-1930s, however, and Zogu faced few external antiregime groups after that.
Zogu's priority was establishing order by creating a national bureaucracy and police force, by disarming the northern tribesmen (except his own), and by eliminating to a large extent the practice of the blood feud.

On 21 November 1923, Noli was consecrated Bishop of Korça and Metropolitan of Durrës.
He was now both head of the Orthodox Church in Albania and leader of a liberal political party, the main opposition to the conservative forces of Ahmet Zogu (1895-1961), who were supported primarily by the feudal landowners and the middle class.
On 23 February 1924 an attempt was made in parliament on the life of Ahmet Zogu and two months later, on 22 April 1924, nationalist figure and deputy Avni Rustemi (1895-1924) was assassinated, allegedly by Zogist forces.

Parliament on Thursday passed a law that acknowledges that Leka Zogu and his family are inheritors of Ahmet Zogu, a Muslim chieftain who declared himself king of Albania in 1928 and ruled until the Italian army invaded the country in 1939.
The law, which passed 72-3 with six abstentions, gave Leka Zogu, his wife and their son the right to carry diplomatic passports and participate in official ceremonies.

Leka Zogu is a Muslim, which in my heart and mind gives him an edge over what we have.
