  Family Chronicle - Ahnentafel Charts...
The beauty of an ahnentafel is that these same 16 generations would fit on one page, depending on the type size chosen, and the same numbering system used in a standard pedigree chart again allows you to quickly discern your kinship with anyone on the ahnentafel.
An ahnentafel is particularly useful when you are corresponding with another genealogist in your family because indicating unknown ancestors with a blank space or line will allow them to see immediately where your genealogical research ends and, from the names and dates given, where you might have common ancestry.

Ahnentafel is a German word--Ahnen meaning ancestors, and tafel meaning chart.

If you want to determine the descendancy of the person whose ahnentafel number is 337, subtract one (since this person is odd-numbered we know it is a female) and divide 336 by 2 to equal 168.

I noticed that on an ahnentafel report and on the wall chart, if I have the same couple appearing more than once within a single generation, sometimes the second appearance and any following appearances are omitted on the report/chart - treated just the same as people who aren't filled in at all in the database.
There are some couples that appear multiple times within a generation and are both displayed in the ahnentafel or wall chart (and they are always displayed, not sometimes yes, sometimes no).

Numbering Systems In Genealogy - Ahnentafel
If you are No. 1, then your father is No. 2, your mother No. 3, your paternal grandfather No. 4, etc. In this system, a person's father's number is always twice the person's number and his or her mother's number is twice plus one.
A computer can be easily programmed to find parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc., by use of the prevailing rule of the ahnentafel: The father's number is always twice as large as the child's and the mother's is one greater than that.
The same arithmetic progression that makes the ahnentafel wonderful for keeping track of ancestors could become a problem if you are fortunate to trace back many generations.
