 EKF :: Ku’ula 10-12 Curriculum
We would like to experiment raising Aholehole and see if we can be successful in nurturing and reproducing this marine life species.
Our project is important because we are reproducing the Aholehole fish, and are trying to have enough fish so when one of the people of Keaukaha get hungry for this fish they can come and take fish from us and feed their family.
If we were to do another project based on the same content, the project would be about the history of the Aholehole and how the Hawaiians raised and nurtured the fish, and to compare the difference from their doing to ours, and if the outcome of it all would be successful.

It was from his horse that he fished for mullet, a prized food fish then and now.
If mullet were not in season, he would fish for aholehole at the corner of the golf course where the Manoa Stream empties into the Ala Wai.
But I noted with great sadness that his catch consisted not of mullet or my favorite aholehole, but tilapia, a fish that had by then overrun the Ala Wai.

It began with native use of reef fish and pond-raised mullet and aholehole.
When the Chinese arrived and came to dominate the food service industry, their preference for foodstuffs from fresh water or estuaries adapted easily to some species but there was less interest in other reef life, bottom fish, and pelagic species found in Hawaiian waters.

 Inland ponds - Hawaii History - Fishponds
Water in these ponds was usually brackish and the ponds were therefore used to nurture fish and shrimp adapted to those conditions: aholehole (silver perch), `o`opu (gobies), awa (milkfish), `opae ula (small, red shrimp) and limu kalawai (fresh water algae).
Areas between the plant mounds became habitat for fish such as aholehole and `o`opu.
Fishponds of this type were usually small, limited by the earth and stone embankment materials used in constructing walls and the terrace design that privileged taro growing over fish raising.

Dinner might consist of aholehole, mullet, golden perch (tilapia), meaty rainbow trout raised from eggs shipped in from Washington state, or catfish scooped out of the ponds that very afternoon.
The fish is served real local-style, pan-fried or steamed in a ti leaf with onions and lemon for $16.95 ($18.95 for aholehole) complete with rice, canned corn (would it be so hard to split a fresh cob?), a simple salad of lettuce and dessert of apple pie.
Granted, not everyone likes their fish served this way, meant to be eaten only with white rice and a little soy sauce.
