AHOUSAHT, B.C. -- As native protests against fish farms reached a crescendo last week in British Columbia, another First Nation on the west coast of Vancouver Island was steering its fate in the opposite direction.
The Ahousaht action sets the band on a different course than tribes such as the Nuxalk and Heiltsuk, which are fighting to eliminate salmon farming in their territories farther north along the B.C. coast.
The move by the Ahousaht is especially noteworthy because the band was long a staunch opponent of salmon aquaculture.
