The demand for water for pasture irrigation has triggered a large increase in the amount of water being taken from Northland's streams and rivers.
Having records at their fingertips enables staff to inform major water users if levels are dropping towards the point where they may have to stop taking water or reduce their take.
Because some Northland streams and rivers are fully allocated, and because those irrigating from streams are forced to stop pumping as river levels drop during extreme dry periods, farmers are increasingly turning to dams to ensure that they have a reliable water source when they need it most.
