The M6A itself was an impressive low-wing monoplane, well- streamlined, with twin floats.

This "all or nothing" mentality had great impact on the design of the Aichi M6A Seiran (Mountain Haze in English), a submarine carried aircraft designed from the outset for offensive missions.
As the war went from bad to worse, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) came up with a plan to develop an aircraft that would be carried to sea in a submarine and bomb the Panama Canal.

The simplified story is that the last section of the canopy rotated 180 degrees along the central axis of the fuselage, thereby exposing the gun.
