  Aiki Jinja - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aiki Jinja is the shrine built by Morihei Ueshiba in Iwama in honor of the deities of aikido.
They were both renovated by the Saito family in 2001-2002 with the approval of the Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba, owner of the Aiki Jinja.
This renovation also included a beautiful fence set up around the compound, and a huge stone with the carvings "Aiki Jinja" designed by Seiseki Abe, a master of calligraphy and of Aikido who was also the calligraphy teacher of Morihei Ueshiba and is the teacher of Hitohiro Saito Shihan.

For one and a half years I was privileged to be uchi-deshi under the late Morihiro Saito Shihan, Caretaker of the Aiki Jinja, and Dojo Cho of O'Sensei's dojo.
Saito Sensei was the very embodiment of an archetypal warrior/teacher, inspiring as he taught Aiki-Ken and Aiki-Jo in the snow and howling wind with only a keiko gi on in the freezing winter, and sweated buckets with the students in the muggy gasshuku season too.
Saito Sensei and the uchi-deshi were in the Jinja for the ceremony.

Saito Sensei 9th dan, was renowned as a superior exponent and teacher of Aikido who dedicated his life to passing on the Aikido taught to him by the founder, and in particular, the study of its traditional weapon technique.
Hiroki Nemoto shihan 6th dan has established an uchi-deshi programme at his Aiki House, which is located in Iwama, on the opposite side of the railway line from the Ibaraki Shibu dojo.
Hitohiro Saito, the son of Morihiro Saito, has left the Aiki Kai organisation but is continuing the tradition by conducting training in Aikido now under the banner of the Iwama Shinshin Aiki Shurenkai.

During Saito sensei’s period as uchi-deshi for o-sensei he taught classes in the Iwama dojo when Ueshiba was away but also as well as while Ueshiba was present, while some other of Ueshiba's students taught at the Aikikai Hombu in the presence or absence of the founder of the art.
When Ueshiba passed on, he gave Morihiro Saito the responsibility of carrying on the teaching at the Iwama dojo and also the position of caretaker of the Aiki Jinja located in Iwama.
Upon Saito's passing, the son, Hitohiro Saito, kept, for a brief period of time, the title of Dojo Cho (dojo head) of Morihei Ueshiba's dojo and as Caretaker of Aikishrine Aiki Jinja, a position he had been exercising for some years now, due to his father's aging.

This article is actually part II of my recent article, "A New Leader in Iwama," this time focusing more on the continuance of the Saito legacy.
For decades, Aiki News has been involved in the documentation and distribution of the life teachings of Saito Shihan, and for decades Aiki News has had a booth at the Iwama Tai Sai festival.
This decision to exclude Aiki News was a very short sighted decision based on emotions rather than on a general view of the future of Aikido in Iwama.

In a small town in Ibaraki Prefecture there is a shrine called Aiki Jinja.
He informed us that he had long looked up to the enshrined kami of our shrine, Sarutahiko Okami as the teacher and the guardian kami of Aikido.
Although other kami were enshrined at Aiki Jinja, he still resolved that Sarutahiko Okami would be installed as the central divinity of Aikido and therefore I made the journey to Iwama with a bunke goshintai, a branch of the sacred worship object to represent the spirit of Sarutahiko Okami.

Kanji says "Aiki jinja" and was brushed by Abe-sensei, the great and still-living calligrapher who taught Osensei, among others, the Way of the Brush.
Aesthetically, it is the expressive and often lovely ink-brushed abstract looking designs you'll inevitably find in any aikido dojo, webpage, poster, advertisement and other places such as on aikido clothing, t-shirts, and bags.
Takemusu Aiki means "spontaneous creation of divine techniques".

Many congratulations to Hiroshi Isoyama Shihan who is the caretaker of the dojo and Aiki Jinja Shrine.
This is the old Ueshiba residence where O'Sensei lived during the war and continued to visit throughout his life.
After his passing, the residence, grounds and Aiki Jinja was passed down to 2nd Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba and now to 3rd Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba.

 Visit to Iwama
It would be a big setback for Aikido in general if this beautiful property is sold.
Saito has built a new dojo on his own adjacent property, and the Aiki Shrine (Jinja) is national property, so if the property is sold the Iwama training will continue.
The morning keiko/practice was either jo or bokken outdoors, weather permitting, while the evening practice was Taijutsu in the dojo.

Unfortunately, both are in Japanese and have not been translated, though there is a summary of the Founder's biography in the earlier issues of "Aiki News" (recently re-issued on DVD).
In the absence of peace in China, the inadequacy of Japanese forces against those of the United States was clear to many who concerned themselves with such matters and the Founder may have been one of those individuals.
It was in this period that Ueshiba resigned his official duties in Tokyo and moved to Iwama, beginning the construction of the Aiki Jinja and turning his attentions to farming.

O'Sensei granted Saito Sensei a parcel of land adjacent to the Iwama Dojo and upon O'Sensei's passing Saito Sensei became custodian of the neighbouring Aiki Jinja (Aikido Shrine) and Dojo Cho (headmaster) of the Aiki Shurenkai (Iwama) Dojo.
Since that time Saito Sensei has taught thousands of people as uchi deshi (live in) and soto deshi (live out) in Iwama and traveled all over the world to lead Aikido seminars.
He is also an Accredited Martial Arts Instructor with the Australian Sports Commission and Dojo Cho of the Aiki Kunren Dojo located in Sydney Australia.
