Aikido - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (植芝盛平) (also known by aikidoka as o-sensei (大先生)) over the period of the 1930s to the 1960s.
When aikidoka say that someone (usually a high ranking teacher) is training with a lot of ki, they usually want to express that the person in question has developed a high level of harmony in the execution of his technique.
These aikidoka tend to frown on the overemphasis of the philosophical and spiritual aspects of ki.

The fact of the matter is that there is a large portion of aikidoka who are still, and no doubt will continue to be, on their 'quest for ki'.

Just as an echo is not fenced in by walls surrounding it, so too must the aikidoka move towards this formlessness, away from the fixedness of physical contact, to the releasing experience of ma ai, and timing.
As the aikidoka marches forward, different aspects of the art unfold in front of the trainee's mental eye.

 Japanese for Aikidoka
The idea behind irimi is to place oneself in relation to an attacker in such a way that the attacker is unable to continue to attack effectively, and in such a way that one is able to control effectively the attacker’s balance.
Developing or increasing one’s own ki, according to the ki-realist, thus confers upon the aikidoka greater power and control over his/her own body, and may also have the added benefits of improved health and longevity.
Since the description “extend ki” is somewhat more manageable, the concept of ki has a class of well-defined uses for the ki-anti-realist, but does not carry with it any ontological commitments beyond the scope of mainstream scientific theories.

He refers to ki as "the power of the spirit of the mind that we all possess but which we use only on rare occasion." There is no noticable mention of ki in the work of Gozo Shioda sensei, the founder of Yoshinkan Aikido.

Modern aikidoka are less concerned with the historiography of the concept of KI than with the question of whether or not the term "KI" denotes anything real, and, if so, just what it does denote.
There are a number of aikidoka who claim to be able to demonstrate the (objective) existence of KI by performing various sorts of feats.
Not all aikidoka believe that KI is a kind of "stuff" or "energy." For some aikidoka, KI is an expedient concept -- a blanket-concept which covers intentions, momentum, will, and attention.

Rather, it would be true to say that the effectiveness of any aikido technique is relative to the aikidoka's skill to execute that technique, irrespective of style.
On the other hand, a major criticism of this style is that it tends to produce aikidoka that are too "robotic" in their technique.
The idea is to create a very strong axis along a straight and vertical line on which to centre the aikidoka's weight.

One of the unique aspects of Aikido practice is the age distribution of aikidoka.
In many dojos, the mean age of aikidoka is in the thirties and there are often many individuals in their forties, fifties, sixties, and older.
In the past four years there have been at least two incidents where aikidoka have experienced cardiac crises on the mat that resulted in respiratory arrest and pulselessness; in other words, the person stopped breathing and the heart stopped beating.

On the subject of the nature of ki, perhaps more than in any other area of Aikido, the aikidoka must find his or her own answer, whatever that may be.
What there is, instead, is a disorganized and only partially coherent collection of religious, ethical, and metaphysical beliefs which are only more or less shared by aikidoka, and which are either transmitted by word of mouth or found in scattered publications about aikido.
Seventh, training with weapons provides aikidoka with an opportunity to develop a kind of responsiveness and sensitivity to the movements and actions of others within a format that is usually highly structured.

So, the sword art aspects demanded that my exercise system contain a lot of suburi, but disguised in different combinations of movement, and to be trained both solo and with a partner.
In aikido the partner exercises are central - solo training is both rare and peripheral - so a sword system without partner training would be alienating to the aikidoka.
So, the aikidoka needs some aspects of training which have a clear solo exercise ingredient.

Judo Article - Martial Arts - Breaking it Down
This is one of the primary points of confusion and contention between both Aikidoka and non-Aikidoka.
For instance, it has been said of various practitioners using Aikido Strategy and Techniques that "he wasn't doing Aikido" simply because the observer felt that said practitioner was being too aggressive or violent, he wasn't "attempting to return harmony" to the chaotic situation.
But without this sort of framework, they and the Aikidoka are left to arguing in never ending circles about effectiveness, etc. and are usually forced to end with "Aikido Sucks!" and "You know nothing!", which is wholly unsatisfactory to both parties.

 Aikido
Aikido is a responsive martial art in which the practitioner, called an Aikidoka, uses off-balances and an attacker's own strength and momentum to gain control instead of attempting specific techniques to prevail.
An advantage of this tactic over martial arts which emphasize ways to directly injure an attacker is that Aikido can be performed by people of almost any age or size, often despite physical limitation, and still be effective against even the largest and strongest of individuals.
The core of this philosophy includes two fundamental threads: a commitment to peaceful, creative resolution of conflict whenever possible and a commitment to general self-improvement.

After the tournament, the aikidoka was asked if he modified his training at all to win the tournament.
He replied that he mostly did regular aikido training (but lots of it), with a few modified aikido exercises (randori based) that him and his training partner devised especially to prepare for the tournament.
