Aimone became Duke of Aosta (the cadet branch of the Royal House of Savoy) after the death of his older brother, Amadeo.
Aimone was, however, nearly the only available candidate, since Vittorio Emmanuele only had a single son (though many daughters).
I'm not precisely sure where Aimone was from 1943-45; probably in the short-lived "Kingdom of the South," since the Nazis as well as Mussolini in his puppet state in Saló attempted to capture as many of the royal "traitors" as possible, and he would not have lasted.

Italy's oldest national park, formerly King Vittorio Emanuele II's hunting reserve, south of Aosta, was established in 1922.
Built in the mid-14th century by Aimone di Challant, a relative of the powerful Savoy family, it epitomises what every good fairy-tale castle should have - pointed turrets, portcullises, spiral staircases and a beautifully preserved courtyard.
The monastery was founded, at 8,100ft, by St Bernard, archdeacon of Aosta.
