LIFE [Natural habitats and rare species]
The sentry of pure waters, the otter occupies a place of choice the river's ecosystem: seeking diversified food, hides in the river banks and good quality water, its presence is emblematic of a river in good health.
The river's old beds, supplied with water either by the river itself when it floods, or by the water table, or both, are wet areas that play a predominant role in the life of numerous species: feeding, refuge, reproduction.
Today, this is the most common environment around the Lower Ain river: the areas abandoned by the river are rapidly colonised by herbaceous vegetation, bush willows, then poplars, which contribute to enriching the soil by trapping fines.

The Town of 'AinGhazal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
The eastern area across the Zarqa River seems to have declined in terms of residential housing, and on the western side of the Zarqa housing density fell considerably during the PPNC, indicating a decline in absolute population that continued then onwards.
'Ain Ghazal's social system, the interrelationship of families, lineages, and clans that defined rights and obligations to land tenure, ritual property, and community obligations, was probably strained by the newcomers, but by demonstrating the degree of kinship ties, the stresses were probably ameliorated if not totally resolved.
The eruptive expansion of 'Ain Ghazal on the western bank of the Zarqa River is remarkable enough, but the establishment of the new neighborhood across the river on the eastern bank raises several questions due to the automatic isolation of this group of people.

fakejazz: Smog - A River Ain't Too Much To Love (Drag City)
The metaphor contained in the album's title relates to the song "Say Valley Maker." Love is related to a river, growing and receding, carving out the terrain and creating lush valleys, but possibly drying out eventually, leaving the valley barren.
The metaphor of a river is also used effectively in "Rock Bottom Riser," where Callahan thanks all of those who helped him when he was at his lowest point.
Creating excellent imagery, he chases gold rings by diving after them into the river, but when he reaches the bottom empty handed, he is left to search for the sun for the way back up, its rays breaking apart into the very rings he was chasing.

 Mountains & Fresh Water
Remember that when you look at a real world map of a river in mountainous country: it is always following the path of least resistance, always from one spot to the next lowest.
A lake with a very fast current may carry all the debris and dirt deposited in it along the outlet stream, but in most cases the load of sediment carried by in-coming streams is dropped, so that the lake slowly becomes more shallow, and therefore broader.
Water doesn't fall often in a desert and may only run occasionally in some stream beds, but all those landforms like Monument Valley were either cut when the area was wetter (in some cases along giant ice-age lakes) or are being slowly bitten out by the annual gully-washer.

Syria's Water Policy Targets Assyrian Christians
The Khabur river lies within this region and is home to a chain of thirty-five Assyrian villages along both banks of the river.
The Khabur river begins just south of the Turkish border within northern Syria, emerging as a spring from an underground water table at Ras Al-Ain before heading south as a tributary of the Euphrates river within historic Assyria proper.
The conspicuously abrupt water demarcation lines in the area of the Assyrian villages is a consequence of both the severity of the current drought and, more importantly, a result of primitive and corrupt Syrian governmental environmental policy as well as the government's inherent hostility towards the politically disenfranchised Assyrian community.

Criminal Records - Smog : A River Ain't Too Much To Love
Like most Smog albums, this one is stripped down (comprised mainly of Callahan's guitar and voice augmented by violin, piano, and light percussion), but the writing is particularly honest, intimate, and revealing.
That A RIVER AIN'T TOO MUCH TO LOVE was recorded in Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studios may have something to do with its rustic simplicity; it is rootsier and more country-inflected than any previous Smog album.
A slow-motion country treatment of the Leadbelly song "In the Pines" drives the point home, but Callahan's lyrics--which demonstrate his usual flair for narrative, imagery, detail, and moving confessionalism--are the real anchor, sounding as though they were written during a winter-long hibernation in a backwoods cabin.

Smog: A River Ain't Too Much to Love: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Bill Callahan, the man behind Smog's dark, conflicted narratives, is often critically thought to be "enigmatic"-- mainly because he addresses frequently passionate subjects with dispassion.
The more confrontational sound of early Smog-- the distinct instrumentation and the sometimes sardonic and sometimes nasty edge-- has been blunted, whether by age or simply a desire to not repeat himself.
An album that might be superficially seen as inappropriately becalmed, in its own subdued way, feels instead like life welling up where it had once been suppressed, as human as anything Callahan has ever done.

He seems more comfortable behind a mask, and he has made a rather long and successful career of it.
Produced by Callahan and recorded with Connie Lovatt on bass and Jim White on drums at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio in Austin, TX, over 10 days, the simple instrumentation (aided at times by hammer dulcimer, air drum, fiddle, and on one track, piano by labelmate Joanna Newsom) enhances the sense of intimacy.
Callahan told Billboard.com, “I realized I had a bunch of songs about rivers and some sort of imagery, and once I got a few of them it started to fit into everything I had half-finished.” And so, we get a very outdoors-y feeling record, something you might literally hear around a campfire.
