 AINO ACKTÉ
Finnish soprano Aino AcktÈ (1876-1944) (her real last name was "AchtÈ" which she changed to stop the French from making fun of it as "achetÈ" in French means "bought"), played an important part on the Finnish musical scene.
Aino made her debut in Helsinki at the age of 17 after which she studied at the Paris Conservatory.
After Marguerite in Faust, AcktÈ's next most important role was Salome, which, after the 1905 premiere, obsessed her to the extent that she visited Strauss to convince him that she was the only real Salome.

Soon after the novel was published, internationally acclaimed Finnish opera singer Aino Ackté began to adapt it into a libretto, which she submitted to the author for approval.
Ackté actively sought a composer for her project, and Jean Sibelius, for example, held on to the libretto for two years before finally declining the commission.
Ackté later offered her libretto to Leevi Madetoja, whose opera "Pohjalaisia" had been hailed as a 'national opera' soon after its premiere in 1924.

What Aino Ackte and her successors have managed to do with resounding success is to encourage and promote the flourishing of Finnish music.
Since 1967, when it was relaunched after a long hiatus, the selection has perhaps been more eclectic but, in addition to existing works, six new operas by Finnish composers have been given their world premieres at Savonlinna, and a number of them have gone on to be produced elsewhere and to attract a wider audience.

The singer’s trained ear immediately recognized the tremendous potential of the romantic, excellently preserved castle — in both atmospheric and acoustic terms.
Ackte’s original brainchild, however, didn’t survive World War I. In 1967, however, the festival was revived as the Savonlinna Music Days festival.
