  Air (jazz group) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Air was a jazz trio founded in 1971 by saxophone player Henry Threadgill, double bassist Fred Hopkins and drummer Steve McCall.
The group recorded some twelve albums, among them Air Lore from 1979, which is a recording of improvisations over more Scott Joplin songs as well as selections by Jelly Roll Morton and a Henry Threadgill original.
Air broke up and reformed several times, and after McCall's death, Andrew Cyrille performed as part of the trio.

Given that jazz has often served as a metaphor for freedom, and has functioned as a critical arena for contesting racial and gender issues, the study of jazz (in its production, reception and evaluation) is significant in terms of probing the goals and assumptions of a society aspiring to democracy and equal opportunity.
Dan Gailey, Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at KU, is well-known as a composer for jazz ensemble.

Original Dixieland Jass Band (after mid-1917 spelling changed to Jazz) was a New Orleans band which, in 1917, was the first ever to make a jazz recording.
The Original Dixieland Jass Band are often known by their initials, the O.D.J.B. The band consisted of 5 white musicians who had previously been playing in the Papa Jack Laine bands, a diverse and racially integrated collection of musicians who played for parades, dances, and advertising in New Orleans.
