Air (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Air is a French band, consisting of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, founded in 1995.
Although Air's music is often referred to as electronica or trip-hop and is often found in such bins in record stores, their form of electronic music really owes more to the synthesizer sounds of the 1970s such as Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis.
Air's music also has jazz inflections at times, and their ability to improvise is more clearly highlighted in the live arena.

Air played one live gig in Paris just before the onset of summer 2001 and, in the autumn, the duo's French fans were treated to an extensive tour.

Air - Music Of Yesterday music theory
In a general sense air, from the element whose vibration is the cause of music, has come to mean that particular kind of music which is independent of harmony.
In common parlance air is rhythmical melody: any melody or kind of melody of which the feet are of the same duration, and the phrases bear some recognizable proportion one to another.
About the beginning of the 17th century many part songs were written, differing from those of the preceding century in many important particulars, but chiefly in the fact of their interest being thrown into one, generally the upper, part; the other parts being subordinate.

BBC - Dance Review - Air, Talkie Walkie
I've been an Air fan since I watched the ‘Sexy Boy’ video on television in January 1998 and from then on have been a big fan and just thinking that they are the greatest band in the world, and having seen them live twice I think their interpretation of their songs live are excellent.
Their music is beautiful, everything about it is wonderful in its simplicity of ‘Ce Matin La’ to the constructed ‘Surfing on a rocket’, their music to me is perfect and harmonious.
The naivety of the lyrics, rather than grating, is charming in contrast to the dense musical layers; the relatively predictable chord progression is one of the most pleasing aspects of this album.

Besides the perceived beauty of the music, the factors which probably contributed to its popularity at this time are the sentiment of the verses, its availability as sheet music and the distribution in both America and Europe of an American recording made by the internationally respected opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink in 1915.
In Gilchrist's 1934 article she suggested that the air's 4/4 time-signature - the metre in which the tune appears in Petrie and, by inference, the metre in which Ross notated the tune - could be a mistake.
Fox was writing at a time when Petrie's and Ross's statements that the air was an 'old' one was still believed, and when she uses the word 'origin' she is speaking of the composers rather than the musical roots of the tunes.

French music used to be associated with heavy breathing and 14 year old girls singing about taxi drivers.
However, the late 1990's saw the emergence of a dynamic strand of Gallic dance and chill-out music that has been inescapable ever since, largely due to its omnipresent appearance on TV shows and adverts.
In the past, I feel my music op's have been criticised for focussing a little too much on the background of the tracks and album's in question, becoming autobiographies of the artists, with only brief references to the actual music.

The group "Air" which consists of two frenchmen "Nicolas Godin" & "Jean-Benoit Dunckel", have had something of a turbulent series of studio albums, which saw them peak immediately with 1998's untouchable debut "Moon Safari", and then follow that up the next 1999's sublime instrumental compilation "Premiers Symptomes" (Which was a collection of early material).
For those that fell with love with Air's music via "Moon Safari" (and who didn't??), and have been disappointed with their recent output, this is clearly the best thing they've done since then.
Although usually lumped in the same broad category as Massive Attack and Zero 7, Air's music is usually far more subtle and romantic than their closest downtempo cousins.
