  DRAFT
The purpose of an air admittance valve is to provide a method of allowing air to enter the plumbing drainage system without the use of a vent extended to open air and to prevent sewer gases from escaping into a building.
The air admittance valve shall be rated for the size of the vent to which the valve is connected.
The air admittance valve shall only vent fixtures that are on the same floor level and connect to a horizontal branch drain with a maximum of four branch intervals.

The purpose of an air admittance valve are (1) to provide a method of allowing air to enter the plumbing drainage system without the need for a vent extended outdoors to open air, and (2) to prevent sewer gases from escaping into the building.
Air admittance valves shall be the same size as the vent pipe to which they are connected.
Air admittance valves shall not be installed until all required leak tests of the drainage and vent piping are successfully completed.

The difference between an air admittance valve and a mechanical vent is that no spring is needed to close the valve; it seats by gravity (figures 8 and 9).
Air admittance valves on a vent stack must be at least 6 inches above the flood level rim of the highest fixtures.
Their evaluation report says "When properly used, an air admittance valve system is equivalent to an open piped vent system." The UPC still does not directly recognize air admittance valves, though the use of "Alternate Methods and Materials" is allowed under section 301.2.1.

Air Admittance Valves (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.tamu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Air admittance valves (AAVs) are pressure-activated, one-way mechanical vents, used in a plumbing system to eliminate the need for conventional pipe venting and roof penetrations.
Because air admittance valves eliminate the need for vent stack penetrations and flashing at wall assemblies, attics, and roof decks, they mitigate the potential for air and water leakage due to vent stack penetrations.
AAVs are accepted by major model building and plumbing codes, including IRC 2003, for single or multi family residential construction, and by American Society of Sanitation Engineers (ASSE).

Air admittance valves are designed to decrease the number of external roof and wall surface penetrations required to accomodate soil and ventilating stacks without reducing the effectiveness or performance of the system.
Air admittance valves are packaged in formed polystyrene boxes, the tops of which should be fitted to the valve top after installation, providing insulation for the valve in use.
Air admittance valves can be fitted to sanitary pipe work systems of buildings up to ten storeys high.

 NSF Tests Air Admittance Valves
Air admittance valves are designed to allow air movement in one direction: from the building into the DWV (drain, waste, and vent) piping system.
AAVs are not intended to prevent back pressure or air pressure in the DWV system from exceeding the atmospheric pressure.
Air admittance valves are usually tested to one of two American Society of Sanitary Engineering Standards: ASSE 1050-Air Admittance Valves for Plumbing DWV Systems, Stack Type Devices, and ASSE 1051-Air Admittance Valves for Plumbing Drainage Systems, Fixture and Branch Devices.

How To Install Air Admittance Valves UK : Diy Hints, Tips & Advice : Diy Doctor
The equalisation of pressure prevents the foul air from escaping and the water seals in the traps (bath, toilet and basin) from escaping.
Air admittance valves, when installed, must finish above the highest flood level of the space the valve is in...I.E. If the valve is in the same room as a wash hand basin, it must be higher than the overflow of that basin.
The use of air admittance valves are governed by building regulations and cannot be used in all cases.

A. The Studor Air Admittance Valve (AAV) is a one-way valve that allows air to enter the plumbing drainage system when fixtures discharge.
The valve closes by gravity when discharge is completed and under no flow conditions preventing sewer gas from escaping into the valve.
If air does not enter the system and balance the pressure the water in the fixture trap will be siphoned allowing sewer gas to enter the building.

On the other hand, if the air pressure within the drain becomes suddenly higher than ambient, this positive transient could cause waste water to be pushed into the fixture, breaking the trap seal, with dire hygiene and health consequences if too forceful.
An air admittance valve (AAV, sometimes known as "cheater vent") allows air to enter the plumbing drainage system through a one-way air valve when a plumbing fixture is operated.
AAVs allow greater freedom of design for engineers and architects; the classical application is for an island sink in a kitchen where running a vent upward is not possible.

Positive pressure is generated in two forms within the drainage system: a) constant pressure - which is the slow build-up of pressure due to a long-term blockage within the system; and b) positive transients - which are produced at every discharge of the system, mainly at the base of the stack.

Air out is when completed products that produce objectionable emissions are removed from packaging and unrolled or spaced apart in a well-ventilated warehouse so that fresh air can easily flow in and around the products, thereby quickly removing any pollutants emitted from the products.
Flush out is when large amounts of outdoor air are forced through a recently completed building for a period of 3 to 90 days so that the majority of pollutant emissions from building materials, finishes, and furnishings can be removed from the building before occupancy.
Air that is contaminated with mold, radon, moisture, and pesticides can easily enter the rooms, and pests such as roaches or rodents can enter the rooms, leaving behind odors, allergens, and potentially, disease-causing pathogens.

This allows air to flow into the system preventing a temporary vacuum from pulling the water out of the traps, permitting sewer gas from later entering the building.
Where it is not possible to provide a through-the-roof vent, it is becoming more common to use an Air Admittance Valve, which allows air to flow into the soil lines, protecting the trap seals by breaking the vacuum.
These include numerous tests that rate both the performance of the valve under simulated conditions of use, and objective tests of the performance under laboratory conditions.
