The sequel to last year's AIR BUD, this film expands upon the premise of a dog's prowess at basketball.
In the first BUD, Josh came in contact with the baddie, who was the dog's original owner.
Even though AIR BUD: GOLDEN RECEIVER is a B-film, it appeals to a G audience.

And if the children's applause and laughter that greeted the film as I watched is any gauge, then Air Bud shows you don't always need car chases, comic book heroes or slam-bang action to entertain the kids.

Although it has numerous scenes of Rube Goldberg-like slapstick, 'Air Bud' focuses mainly on the bond between child and dog.
Without preaching, 'Air Bud' actually urges us to think about how extraordinary it is that a human can make his wishes known to a non-human and, more, that the non-human should care enough to cooperate.
The plot of 'Air Bud' is unarguably derivative and contrived, but the emotions it showcases are authentic--anyone who has ever delightedly observed new behavior in a pet will be able to relate to Josh's euphoric pride in his dog.

 AIR BUD: GOLDEN RECEIVER
As pure -- but certainly not perfect -- a sequel as there can be, "Air Bud: Golden Receiver" is essentially a retreading of the original film with only a few new elements thrown in.
Probably unbeknownst to most audiences, however, the original "Air Bud" (the main one of three who appeared in the original) has since passed on to the great fire hydrant in the sky.
Despite the film's very predictable nature and the fact that it only offers a slight variation from the original movie's plot, it still comes off as a fluffy, lightweight piece of celluloid that should easily entertain the kids and not bore their parents to death.

 'Air Bud: Golden Receiver' (G)
"Air Bud: Golden Receiver" is the quintessential G-rated film, a fable of hope and redemption against all odds from which all traces of negativity have been expurgated, despite a subplot involving a caricatured pair of Russian dognappers (Nora Dunn and Perry Anzilotti).
The only thing is, by flushing the material clean, director Richard Martin and writers Paul Tamasy and Aaron Mendelsohn have thrown the baby out with the bathwater.
So here it is: The two best things about "Air Bud" are Tim Conway and Dick Martin as Fred Davis and Phil Phil, a tag team of delightfully imbecilic sports announcers who bring a touch of surrealism to their play-by-play commentary.
