If Air Canada and Canadian were respectively to pay 60% and 40% of the costs of operating a Boeing 767, and be given a seat inventory representing their investment, both would save money.
If however, it is thought that Air Canada and Canadian truly 'compete' with their code-sharing partners on their international routes, surely such arrangements might, on a route by route basis, make sense in the domestic context.
Air Canada's lack of 'feed' can best be solved through an alliance with a U.S. carrier such as Delta, not a merger with Canadian which has no significant U.S. service from Air Canada's Toronto 'Hub'.
