  Air-Engine - LoveToKnow 1911
AIR-ENGINE, the name given to heat-engines which use air for their working substance, that is to say for the substance which is caused alternately to expand and contract by application and removal of heat, this process enabling a portion of the applied heat to be transformed into mechanical work.
A double-acting Stirling engine of 50 horse-power, using air which was maintained by a pump at a fairly high pressure throughout the operations, was used for some years in the Dundee Foundry, where it is credited with having consumed only I7 lb of coal per hour per indicated horse-power.
Cold air was compressed by a pump into a receiver, where it was kept cool during compression and from which it passed through a regenerator into the working cylinder.

 No. 795: Hot-Air Engine
The engine was one fourth as long as the ship itself.
As the air exhausted, it gave its remaining heat to the incoming air.
To work, the engine had to be large and slow moving.

Air engines were commercially available and used routinely, first as metropolitan street transit and later for haulage in mines.
It was a single-stage engine (air expanded in one piston then exhausted) and represented an advance in air engine technology that made air cars feasible: the air was reheated after leaving the tank and before entering the engine.
His engine was two-stage and employed an interheater between the two piston stages to warm the partially expanded compressed air with the surrounding atmosphere.

 Air Engines
On a 2-stroke engine, the upward stroke is the compression stroke.
Air flows in the left side of the timing shaft and is distributed to the cylinders as before through the two left intake ports.
Air is exhausted through the two ports on the right and out the gear-end of the timing shaft.

Stirling engine (or hot air engine)
Air is strongly cooled, and together with compression work from the flywheel the working piston is brought again to the left, the displace piston slides down and the air is heated up again.
The stirling engine appeared at the beginning as a good alternative to the steam engines, but the success was not so big because of high production costs (two cylinders) and the small performances compared with its size.
The α-type stirling engine functions because of the different lever lengths, with which the piston rods attack at the main shaft.

Compressed air is stored in carbon or glass fiber tanks at a pressure of 4,351 pounds per square inch (psi).
This air is fed through an air injector to the engine and flows into a small chamber, which expands the air.
Air tanks fixed to the underside of the vehicle can hold about 79 gallons (300 liters) of air.

Natural Gas Engine-Driven Air Compressors - Buyers' Guide - System Design
High volume users, which consume a large amount of compressed air for longer periods, such as grit blasting will probably require that an additional air compressor be automatically started to maintain system pressure for the duration of that process.
With reciprocating compressors, the rule of thumb was to size the air receiver at one gallon per cfm of compressor capacity.
With natural gas engine driven compressors used as efficient trim machines, or at full load, a rule of two gallons per cfm of compressor capacity may be adequate for most installations.

 Pachasa Air Engine (1928)
Carbon di-oxide (CO2) engines appeared commercially as early as 1909 [1], although the pioneer IC engine designer Bill Brown IV was granted a US patent for such an engine in 1946 and is frequently cited as father of the CO2 engine.
Air engine kits were available from $3 upwards [6].
But by this time, the exhaust valve has opened and instead of trying to re-compress the air in the cylinder, it is pushed out through the transfer tube for the next 180° of rotation until the piston has passed TDC by 12°.

Natural Gas Engine-Driven Air Compressors - Technology - Natural Gas Engine Technology
Automotive-derivative engines are generally replaced at the end of their useful life, and are not rebuilt like the industrial engines.
A Natural Gas Engine is similar to the engine in your car except that instead of using liquid gasoline as a fuel source, natural gas is used as the fuel source.
The advantage of a turbocharged engine is that about 35% more work can be done by a turbocharged engine as compared to a naturally aspirated engine of the same size.

As the air cools the internal pressure reduces and atmospheric pressure acting on the exposed piston pushes it inwards transferring the cool air back to the hot end.

Green Car Congress: Compressed Air Engines
A Virginia inventor is devising a rotary engine with an integral flywheel effect to serve as a single-unit hybrid power plant.
Greenwell (who has 30+ years in the engine side of the auto industry) estimates that the RIDE engine, through its combination of combustion power and kinetic energy storage, could support automotive fuel economies in the range of 100 to 120 mpg without the additional cost of electric motors and batteries.
The Scuderi Group, a company that designed and is developing a new internal combustion engine based on dividing the conventional four-stroke engine cycle across two paired cylinders, is enhancing that basic design with the addition of an air-hybrid capability.

 Per Arne Rikvold. LEGO engine.
This double-action compressed-air engine, which is built with standard LEGO Technic components, illustrates some simple principles of thermodynamics and mechanics.
Compressed air from the blue tank goes via the the gray hose through the valve and one of the two blue hoses to the cylinder.
Instead of working between a hot and a cold reservoir (the boiler and the condenser), it extracts mechanical work by moving air from a high-pressure resservoir, the tank (which is far too small to be an ideal reservoir), to a low-pressure reservoir, the atmosphere.

An Australian man has invented a vehicle powered by compressed air, although it's not the world's first, despite his claims (I've seen other prototypes before).
However, the best part of Angelo Di Pietro's design is that it tosses almost all of the moving parts traditionally associated with engines, instead leaving traditional pistons-in-cylinder designs for a rotary (don't know about its Wankelness, but there you go).
The test vehicle has reached 31MPH, too, so we're not talking a little joke vehicle, although they didn't mention how long a tank would power the little cart.
