DENVER -- An Air Force chaplain who protested that evangelical Christians were trying to ''subvert the system" by winning converts among cadets at the Air Force Academy was removed from administrative duties last week, just as the Pentagon began an in-depth study of alleged religious intolerance among cadets and commanders at the school.
The Air Force's new attention to the issue stems from an earlier scandal at the school in which female cadets said commanding officers ignored or played down numerous cases of sexual assault by male students.
Fox, the academy spokesman, said this change was made because Whittington is retiring from the Air Force in June and Morton is due for a transfer in July to Okinawa.

Of 579 female Air Force Academy cadets surveyed by the Department of Defense, 43 -- or 7.4 percent -- reported they were victims of rape or attempted rape, according to a draft report of the survey results.
The survey was conducted in May to determine the extent of sexual assault at the scandal-plagued academy, and whether commanders are doing enough to stop the assaults.
More than half the women surveyed, 53.5 percent, said they believe the previous leadership of the academy failed to properly handle the sexual assault problem, while 96 percent said they believe the current leadership was making an "honest and reasonable effort to prevent or stop unwanted sexual attention," the draft report says.

A chaplain at the Air Force Academy has described a "systemic and pervasive" problem of religious proselytizing at the academy and says a religious tolerance program she helped create to deal with the problem was watered down after it was shown to officers, including the major general who is the Air Force's chief chaplain.

MeLinda Morton, 48, spoke publicly for the first time as an Air Force task force arrived at the academy in Colorado Springs on Tuesday to investigate accusations that officers, staff members and senior cadets inappropriately used their positions to push their evangelical Christian beliefs on Air Force cadets.
Charles C. Baldwin, the chief of chaplains for the entire Air Force, screened the R.S.V.P. program in October, Captain Morton said, and afterward asked her, "Why is it that the Christians never win?" in response to some of the program's dramatizations of interactions between cadets of different religions.
