  Zimbabwe Defence Forces
The Air force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) was formed in 1980 after the integration of the three belligerent forces, The Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA), and the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army, (ZIPRA), on one side and the Rhodesian Air Force on the other.
Manyame Air Base situated in Harare is the principal air force establishment and provides facilities for aircraft squadrons of differing roles, training schools for technicians, staff and academic training and security dog handlers.
Thornhill Air Base, in Gweru, is home to air force fighter squadrons and the Pilot Training School.

Following the dissolution of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland on 31 December 1963, the name of the air force was not changed but the roundel and flag were changed to display a SINGLE assegai extending vertically across the entire width of the roundel.
A new air force roundel was adopted in the new Rhodesian colours of green and white containing a lion (in gold) and tusk in the centre of the white.
Following the independence of Zimbabwe in April 1980, the air force was renamed the Air Force of Zimbabwe and adopted a new emblem being a Bateleur eagle in flight.

We were all born in Zimbabwe but we have now settled in Nairobi, Kenya, where I am working for an international organisation called the African Airlines Association (AFRAA).
Whilst in the AFZ, I did several military courses ranging from Basic Military Training to leadership courses up to the Command and Staff course, which was designed to equip promising officers for the most senior positions in the military.
After leaving the Air Force of Zimbabwe and following a short stint with a marketing company in the country’s capital, Harare, from January 1998 to April 1999, I moved to Air Zimbabwe as General Manager Engineering.

I returned to Zimbabwe in 1983 to visit relatives, it was interesting to note the changes in the country and in particular at what was now Harare International Airport.
Note some are in camouflage paint, others in a similar scheme as the early 1970s, but of course the name on the side would be Air Force of Zimbabwe, AFZ.
Another change, this time for the Canberras are the corrugated roof shelters to protect the aircraft from the sun, long overdue, far better than the small cockpit covers of earlier years.

Bredenkamp's response included a letter from ACS to the air force in April last year saying that because of the EU embargo two suppliers (whose names have been blanked out) had decided to suspend all shipments to Zimbabwe.

The ICRC has conducted a one-week course on international humanitarian law for officers in the security forces of several southern African nations.
The sixty participants were drawn form the Zimbabwe National Army, the Air Force of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Zimbabwe Prison Services and guest students from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania and Zambia.
Part of its mission is the promotion of IHL in civil society, the military and the security forces.
