Air New Zealand decided not to close its Asian centres because staff there fulfill a variety of functions, including walk-in passenger and cargo sales, although they had no concerns about finding Asian language speakers in New Zealand.
“New Zealand doesn’t enjoy the very low labour costs of the Indias of this world, but we are better positioned than most, and are more socially aligned to many of the world’s major markets,” Barry Hardy says.

Air New Zealand and Qantas have banned men from sitting next to unaccompanied children on flights, sparking accusations of discrimination.
Air New Zealand spokeswoman Rosie Paul said the airline had a similar policy to that of Qantas'.
Ms Paul said Air New Zealand tried to seat children near a crew area so crew could keep an eye on them and, when possible, children were seated next to an empty seat.

Air New Zealand has announced that it is dumping Microsoft in favour of Linux.
According to the New Zealand Herald, Air New Zealand is replacing 150 Compaq servers it uses for email and file and print serving with IBM Z800 mainframes running the Linux operating system, Websphere Application Server, DB2 Database and Tivoli software.
The deal has been worked out with IBM, but Air New Zealand has declined to say how much it is worth or to discuss its terms.
