The Air Force Board (AFB) is the management board of the RAF and consists of the Commanders-in-Chief of the Commands, together with several other Air Officers.
The names and insignia of RAF Officers were based on those in use by the Royal Navy, specifically the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) during World War I. For example, the RAF rank of Flying Officer was derived from the RNAS rank of Flight Sub-Lieutenant.
Officers and Gunners in the RAF Regiment, which was created during World War II, defend RAF airfields from attack.

These are established codes for determining the seniority of officer and other ranks in NATO countries for a particular joint task group or command structure, although specific appointments designate a higher level of seniority over other equivalent rank codes in a given situation.
Warrant Officers in the United States forces are a special case as single track career specialists between the enlisted and officer ranks in terms of seniority, and have no NATO rank code.

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), is an institution for the undergraduate education of officers in the United States Air Force.
According to the report of the Fowler Commission, due to poor leadership, sexual assault is "a part of life at the Academy." It was also reported that one in five male cadets felt women should not be at the Academy.
Following the Air Force Academy sexual assault scandal and due to concern with sexual assault in the U.S. military the Department of Defense was required to establish a task force to investigate sexual harassment and assault at the United States military academies in the law funding the military for fiscal 2004.
