Combat controllers, including Sergeant Chris, are experienced and qualified in static line and high altitude/low opening parachuting, air traffic control, scuba diving (to keep up with Navy Seals when the need arises), small-unit tactics and close-air support.
Combat controllers are the “go-to” people for aerial assaults against enemy forces to protect their fellow Airmen, Soldiers, Navy Seals and Marines as they work to accomplish their missions.
Although combat controllers may serve as one person to a sister service team, they are far from alone in their mission.

The combat controllers’ job is to sneak behind enemy lines, set up mobile air traffic control teams in hostile territory, and guide military aircraft to their landing targets.
The Air Force Combat Control team isn’t as flashy and famous as the Navy SEALS nor as mysterious as the Army’s top-secret Delta Force.
But Air Force combat controllers are likely already on the ground when the paratrooper steps out of the airplane into 800 feet of darkness.

New Measures of Complex Cognitive Abilities: Relating Memory Processes To Aviation Flight Situation Awareness Abilities
This research will expand measures used to select Naval personnel for the broad range of 21st Century Navy jobs (e.g., aviators, air traffic controllers) that will require situation awareness in complex operational environments.
NAMRL Subcontract Principal Investigator: Lt. Cheryl C. Casey, Ph.D. Situation awareness (SA) is a term that emerged from aviator and air traffic controller characterization of incidents and accidents as being due to failure to develop and maintain an awareness of the flight situation (e.g., Doane and Sohn, 2000; Sarter and Woods, 1991; 1995).
The purpose of this research is to (1) develop new tests of cognitive abilities that relate to later flight SA performance, (2) relate the new measures to the Navy for further investigation as personnel classification tools.
