In the American Old West, marshals, also called the "Town Marshal", were appointed or elected police officers of small communities, with similar powers and duties to that of a sheriff, while federal marshals would work in a larger, possibly overlapping area, especially in pioneering country.
In the universe of Star Wars, the rank of Marshal is conjectured to be connected to the TIE fighter forces, being ranks held by senior TIE fighter commanders, equivalent to Imperial Navy Admirals.
Marshal is also a military rank frequently found in the universe of Doctor Who where, more often that not, it is held by various villains who seek galactic domination through military force.

Air Vice Marshall Mantey toured RAF Lakenheath as part of European Command’s Theater Security Cooperation plan that encourages visits by the leaders of foreign air forces in an effort to build military-to military relationships.
According to Marshal Mantey, what struck him the most during his visit was the dedication and enthusiasm each Airman had for the mission as well as the awareness they displayed for how their job supported that mission.

Air Vice-Marshal Sir Laurence Sinclair, who has died aged 93, was awarded the George Cross for rescuing an airman from a blazing bomber.
Sinclair saw that the fuselage had been blown open and the air gunner was lying close to it.
In 1952 he was Commandant of the School of Land Air Warfare at Old Sarum, before being posted to the Air Ministry as assistant chief of staff.

AVM Moore was, in 1956-57 the Director of Intelligence, Air Ministry, Whitehall.
In the phone conversation, AVM Moore said he was notified of the incident involving targets detected by radar at "several USAF bases in East Anglia" and "the scramble by RAF of aircraft without result." He said this was one of "many similar incidents" at that time.
He said the incident was investigated by D.D.I. (Tech) Air Ministry and a report sent to the Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Intelligence).
