Air Marshal is the second most senior rank active in the Royal Air Force today, after the inactivation of Marshal of the Royal Air Force as a substantive rank in peacetime during defence cuts of the 1990s.
Air Marshal is also the term given to American police or security guards who travel undercover aboard commercial airliners.
Equivalent to a Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy or a Lieutenant General in the British Army or the Royal Marines.

Air Vice-Marshal John Barker, who has died aged 93, had the rare distinction of commanding in action both a Spitfire squadron and a four-engine heavy bomber squadron; later he took the surrender of the Japanese forces in Kowloon, served during the Palestine conflict and arrested the ringleaders of an attempted coup in Ceylon.
Appointed to the staff of Air HQ Levant in Jerusalem at the height of the conflict in Palestine, he was responsible for all personnel matters, and was heavily involved in preparing the withdrawal plans.
Barker, with his air officer commanding as co-pilot, led his squadron on the first drop on April 29.

Air Vice-Marshal, you are being far too reluctant to answer these questions.
Obviously the pilot will have the last recourse to say, "no, I do not actually want to take this particular target." There is a whole range of other reasons but certainly it is not the processing of the information, it is the dissemination of the information that we could do much faster.

The 28th of October, 1952 was another bright day at the Indian Air Force air base at Hakimpet where, as a newly graduated pilot, I was undergoing my applied phase of flying training on the last of the piston engined fighter aircraft in the IAF-Spitfire and Tempest of World War II vintage.
The subsequent Court of Inquiry established that the fire in the air had been caused by the failure of the connecting rod in the engine, a not infrequent occurrence in the Tempest aircraft which led soon to its grounding and being phased out of the IAF.
Obviously a large proportion of this total represents Service Personnel who were forced to bale out during WW II.
