Environment Agency - IMPROVING AIR QUALITY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Air is polluted when substances are present in the atmosphere to such an extent that harmful effects on human health and the environment, or a nuisance are caused.
Air quality is a measure of the "cleanliness" of air or the concentrations of air pollutants.
Besides being generally unpleasant, poor air quality may trigger asthmatic attacks, increase admissions to hospital and contribute to the premature death of those who are seriously ill. Dirty air also causes deterioration of the built and natural environment; examples include the effects of acid rain on buildings, vegetation, and ecosystems.
