Air brake (rail) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Electro-pneumatic or EP brakes are a new type of air brake that will allow for immediate application of brakes throughout the train instead of the sequential application for the current type.
The main competitor to the air brake is the vacuum brake, which operates on negative pressure.
Air brakes are also used in trucks, buses and semi-trailers.

Bendix Air Brake   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
A brake is a device for slowing or stopping the motion of a machine, and tokeep it from starting to move.
Brakes of some description are fitted to most wheeled vehicles, including automobiles of all kinds, trains, motorcycles, and bicycles.
Some also feature air brakes designed to slow them down in flight (notable examples include some WWII -era fighter aircraft which used"dive brakes" to allow the planes to maintain a safe speed in a steep descent).

The air pressure forces the piston to move against the spring pressure and causes the brake blocks to be applied to the wheels.
Air will continue to pass from the auxiliary reservoir to the brake cylinder until the pressure in both is equal.
The brake valve is fitted with a pressure sensitive valve which allows a reduction in brake pipe pressure according to the position of the brake valve handle selected by the driver.

continuous brakes, a guard (conductor) was provided to operate the brake on his vehicle to assist the driver stop the train, the "luggage van" was used and it became known as the brake van.  On freight trains, the same term was used for the vehicle used by the guard.
Braking and other systems on the train use compressed air both as a power source and a control medium.  The connections between vehicles are through flexible pipes usually referred to as hoses.  Hoses are normally equipped with isolating cocks to shut off the supply and bleed the hose when vehicles are uncoupled.
The traditional form of wheel brake consisting of a block of friction material (which could be cast iron, wood or nowadays a composition material) hung from a lever and being pressed against the wheel tread by air pressure (in the air brake) or atmospheric pressure in the case of the

When recharging the air brake system, sufficient time must be allowed to permit the air to flow through the associated pipes and ports and into the reservoirs in the entire air brake system.
Once the brakes were released and as the train travelled towards Cathedral, the locomotive engineer had difficulty in controlling train speed and he initiated an emergency brake application.
At this point, the effectiveness of the air brakes was lost as the air in the reservoirs had been depleted.

SDRM Train Air Brake Description and History
The next generation of brakes, invented by George Westinghouse in 1869, added a compressor to the locomotive, and a brake pipe running the length of the train, connected between cars with gladhands, which were symmetrical "non-gendered" connectors that were latched together by hand and would separate by themselves if pulled on.
As air is pumped down the brake pipe by the locomotive, the triple valve directs it into the car's reservoir, where it is held for use in applying the brakes later.
Air is moving through the brake pipe, and suddenly the air passage is shut.

 TSB Reports - Rail 1997 - R97C0147
It can be used alone or in conjunction with the train air brakes and operates by electrically converting the traction motors of a moving locomotive into electric generators which act to retard the driving axles of the locomotives to supply a retarding force.
Applying hand brakes to hold the train stationary while recharging the brake system, or using retainers to retain brake cylinder pressure on selected cars after the train brakes were released, would have ensured that train 353 safely descended the remainder of the hill, but would have caused significant delay to the train.
The dynamic brake is a locomotive braking system that uses the locomotive traction motors to retard the rotation of the locomotive drive axles and can be used alone or in conjunction with the train air brake system.
