Close Air Support And The Marine Air/Ground Team
Close air support is defined by JCS Pub 1 as: Air attacks against hostile targets which are in close proximity to friendly forces and which require detailed integration of each air mission with the fire and movement of those forces.
Their basic method of employing close air support is as an emergency supporting arm when all other resources have failed and the predicted aircraft losses are justified by the situation.
Considering the extensive air operations conducted by all four countries in these conflicts, the almost total lack of close air support could lead one to believe that this mission for aircraft is in fact in the "too hard box".

Although US airpower in the region was increasing, the ability to use it to support these land forces was limited by their unfamiliarity with the concepts of close air support (CAS), fire support coordination lines (FSCLs), and air request nets.
During the air campaign, US Army units in Central Command had moved to the western flank of the coalition in the "Hail Mary" maneuver and a theater air-control system for CAS was in place and had been tested.

The US Air Force strategic doctrine of the 1950's and 1960's was based upon the mass retaliation and mutually assured destruction theories of nuclear warfare.
Interservice rivalry was particularly intense during this time, but the USAF persisted because of the role "...to furnish close combat and logistic air support to the Army..." was outlined in the Unified Command structure publication (JCS 2) giving the CAS mission responsibility to the Air Force.
The need for a Close Air Support and ground attack aircraft designed specifically for those roles was apparent and in the spring of 1970, the AX System Program Office (SPO) was established at the Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.

This article argues that the air force should seriously consider a replacement much earlier than that and that the replacement should be specifically designed for the CAS environment.
Back in the 1960s the air force concluded that a CAS aircraft should have: the ability to operate from short, underdeveloped airfields; high reliability and maintainability; a large weapons load including an anti-armor capability; long range and endurance; a speed of at least 350 knots; maneuverability; and low cost.
In the short term to give the USAF a competent close air support capability in the near future in environments that could include mountainous regions, at the very least the A-10 would have to undergo major modifications.

MANEUVER AIR SUPPORT (MAS)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The introduction of nuclear weapons in 1945 reinforced a long held view that the best use of air power is attacking those critical strategic nodes which a military commander chooses to believe are essential for his enemy to continue fighting.
Although the use of nuclear weapons was unlikely, the orientation of air forces toward deep strike established a mindset and doctrines which carried over to the employment of air-delivered conventional weapons.
MAS is very different from CAS (close air support) which has become a highly controlled alleged air-substitute for artillery fire and will, in the future, be delivered from remote locations well beyond the grunt's view on the battlefield.
