AirTrain JFK is a 13 km (8.1 mile) rapid transit system in New York City that connects John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to the city's subway and commuter trains.
AirTrain connects the airport terminals and parking areas with Long Island Rail Road and New York City Subway lines at Jamaica and Howard Beach stations in Queens.
AirTrain JFK uses the same Advanced Rapid Transit (formerly Intermediate Capacity Transit System) technology from Bombardier as the SkyTrain in Vancouver, Canada and the Putra LRT in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

AirTrain is an automated, rubber-tire people mover that services the SFO terminal complex and the remote Rental Car Center.
Although AirTrain has a station at Terminal 1, some architectural complications that I suspect relate to the temporary placement of the huge luggage screening machines in the ticketing lobby have prevented construction of the planned direct connection between the terminal and the AirTrain station.

J.F.K. by AirTrain: Bag the Bus - New York Times
Based on my trip on the AirTrain on a Friday evening last month, and feedback from others who have taken the train, I'd say it's definitely an improvement over the buses that used to carry passengers between the airport and nearby train and subway stations.
The biggest advantage of the AirTrain is that it provides a way to get to J.F.K. entirely by rail, eliminating the variable of road traffic from the complex calculation of how long it will take to get there.
According to the AirTrain J.F.K. brochure, the longest passengers should have to wait for a train is 12 minutes (late at night), with a 4- to 8-minute wait typical during the day.

Bay Area Rapid Transit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Procurement is currently underway for a people mover that would directly connect the Coliseum station to the terminal buildings at Oakland International Airport.
This connection would physically resemble the AirTrain connection to New York City's JFK Airport, in that passengers would leave standard subway cars at a nearby station and enter a specialized people mover to reach the airport itself.
However, unlike the AirTrain, the Oakland Airport Connector will be operated by BART, and integrated into the BART fare system, with standard BART ticket gates located at the entrance to the station at the Airport end of the people mover.

AirTrain Question [Archive] - Wired New York Forum
March 18th, 2003, 08:07 PM We all know that last year, construction of the JFK Airtrain was suspended indefinitely because of the very tragic death of a test operator, who was crushed when a concrete block simulating passenger load detached from the floor when the train hit a curve.
AirTrain won't be added to the subway map until Feb. 22, when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority publishes a new version to coincide with major route changes.
The AirTrain connections to and from the subway and commuter rail stations in Jamaica, Queens, and the subway station at Howard Beach, Queens, have both become popular with airline passengers, the officials said.

JFK AirTrain set to open December 17th - UrbanPlanet.org
The Port Authority’s AirTrain will finally open on Dec. 17 with great fanfare, despite the death of an operator during last year’s test run, and despite the admission that the $1.9 billion project is at best only a first step toward improving access to the city’s airports.
The AirTrain does not, however, provide the direct, one-seat ride from Kennedy to Manhattan that critics have long contended is the only real way to make a mass transit trip to the airport appealing.
But the stations and tracks at the airport itself are designed such that it would be almost impossible for a regular subway car to make the journey, he said.

The AirTrain is basically the airport’s inter-terminal shuttle, extended to reach the Jamaica LIRR/subway station on the E line, and the A line JFK stop.
There are actually three AirTrain lines: an inner loop that just goes to the terminals (this train goes in the opposite direction, and arrives on the other side of the platform), and two outer lines with terminals at the two subway/train stations.
If they mean to create a one-seat ride form Downtown to the JFK terminals, then they have to extend the AirTrain to Manhattan, which sounds costly and stupid to me. The AirTrain track guage is the same as the subway one, but the AirTrain is basically an automated tram.
