Newark Airtrain uses six car trains, two end cars with the motors and interior console for the movement, while the 4 cars in between are trailer cars.
The end cars on the Newark trains have the same rail fan window as the JFK counterparts at one end, however the cars are far narrower in width and the trailer cars have only side windows and you cannot see the next car in front or back.
The Airtrain runs to the rear of the terminals, while the roadways are in front.

The AirTrain does not, however, provide the direct, one-seat ride from Kennedy to Manhattan that critics have long contended is the only real way to make a mass transit trip to the airport appealing.
A study sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) is underway to investigate options for connecting the AirTrain directly to the downtown transit hub, however, and the Port Authority says it would likely play a great role in such a project.

New York only built the Airtrain to JFK a few years ago, but even that development was half-hearted.
The Airtrain is really a glorified shuttle to a rail junction in Jamaica, Queens, where passengers can transfer to either the Long Island Railroad or the subway.
I don’t take the Airtrain all that much, I have to admit: basically only when (a) there’s a fair amount of traffic — ie I’m not on an early-morning flight out of JFK, when you can get there in a cab in 20 minutes — and (b) when I don’t have much luggage.

NIMBYKiller, the JFK Airtrain IS heavy rail, not light rail.
I may be wrong on this but when they first opened AirTrain JFK they said something to the effect that the system was built to one day accomodate the possibility to have AirTrain service continue over the subway or the LIRR.
AirTrain cars would continue into the airport and to Jamaica.This could be built in less than a year.

We all know that last year, construction of the JFK Airtrain was suspended indefinitely because of the very tragic death of a test operator, who was crushed when a concrete block simulating passenger load detached from the floor when the train hit a curve.
Before AirTrain, you could take the A subway line from midtown and it would take around an hour and a half.
AirTrain JFK is over 90 percent complete (overall civil work), excluding the construction of the AirTrain Terminal at Jamaica Station.
