CHICAGO (Reuters) — AirTran Holdings, parent of low-cost carrier AirTran Airways, reported a jump in quarterly profit Wednesday, driven by a rapid increase in capacity and tight controls on expenses.
AirTran, which has its main hub in Atlanta, reported net income of $19.6 million, or 24 cents per share, in the third quarter, compared with a profit of $1.2 million, or 2 cents per share, a year earlier.
AirTran results typically have been weaker in the third quarter, in contrast to other low-cost carriers, but the Orlando, Florida-based airline hopes that more east-west flights will improve results in third quarters.

CHICAGO (Reuters) — AirTran Holdings, parent of low-cost carrier AirTran Airways, reported Thursday it notched a record profit in the second quarter on revenue gains as it increased traffic and load factors.
AirTran's unit revenue — revenue per available seat mile — increased 16.8% year over year on a 2.4 percentage point increase in load factor and a 13.2% improvement in yield.
AirTran said fuel prices increased 33% year over year and resulted in a 10.8% increase in operating costs per available seat mile.
