Apple calls it AirTunes, and at first glance, it looks like a versatile way to get your music from here to there.
The AirTunes signal is encyrpted for just one specific base station, so you can't "beam" your music to multiple base stations.
The spectrum used by Wi-Fi devices is a crowded neighborhood, and AirTunes may be prone to interference from everything from microwave ovens to cordless phones.

I feel that Apple's AirPort Express with AirTunes is one of the coolest things since sliced bread, despite the fact that I don't even own one yet; over time I could see myself eventually owning numerous AirPort Expresses serving multiple purposes.
The reason AirTunes only needs the one receiving component is because it is receiving data transmitted by an existing computer on an existing wireless network.
The fact that it is only sending my music to the stereo amp and not the other computer sounds is also wonderful as I was concerned that maybe it would be just like another computer speaker system, but it's not.

The multi-purpose AirPort Express Base Station is about the size of a PowerBook or iPod AC Adapter and includes an Ethernet WAN port, USB port for printer sharing, and an audio mini-jack.
AirPort Express can act as a traditional base station by sharing a DSL or Cable Modem connection on the WAN port, can extend the range of an existing AirPort Extreme network as a wireless bridge, or can connect to a stereo to wireless stream tunes from any Mac.
The bundled AirTunes software adds a feature to iTunes which allows it to select a stereo-connected AirPort Express station to receive streamed audio.

However, i have just purchased airtunes to steram music into another room, and to cut a very long story short, my router is interfering with my airtunes.
The airtunes adapter can also work as a router, if i plug a modem into it, but the problem is, all the modems i can see (ADSL modems) have to be plugged into a mac/pc via USB in order to work.
So, i need a modem, which i can plug into my airtunes, which does not need to be plugged into a mac/pc for it to work (and then the macs can wirlessly find the modem as it is connected to airtunes).....am i making sense?!?!

Once this all is done and your AirPort Express comes up, you should see a pretty blue light on the side (front) of it, indicating that your WDS connection is up and purring and you can now hook up your speakers, fire up iTunes, and rock the house.
I have noticed some latency when I move around and switch between the APs, but my house is only about 1000 square feet, and the WAP54G covers almost the entire thing, so I think it drowns out the AX a bit and the network isn’t always sure which AP to choose.
The airtunes streaming works very well though, as long as I have at least 3 bars of antenna, and it works from either AP.

Morgan McLintic on PR: AirTunes - unseen on WiFi network
I was recently given an AirPort Express with AirTunes wireless base station, which is supposed to connect iTunes to remote speakers over a wireless network.
I can set up the AirTunes base station as a standalone wireless router, connect to it using my Powerbook and stream songs or podcasts to my remote speakers just fine, so I know the connections are all solid.
Strikes me that quite a few people would want to connect AirTunes to their existing wireless network (and in fact the set-up wizard walks you through it) but for some reason iTunes can't see it on the network.

MacFixIt - AirPort audio dropouts with AirTunes when using 802.11b cards; screeching
A number of readers have recently begun reporting an issue where an AirTunes audio stream drops out when running an Airport Extreme base station in mixed 802.11b/g mode and streaming music from a Mac running an 802.11b Airport card (not and AirPort Extreme card).
One user writes "All the older Airport-based Macs suffer sporadic drop-offs with Airtunes, whether at 'b only' or 'b/g compatible' settings for the base and express stations [...] On the other hand, the newer Airport-Extreme-carded Macs stream flawlessly at either 'b' or 'b/g' settings, even for music shared from the older Macs.
Another thing that really bothers me is that when the Express is idle (connected to my home stereo through an analog connection) I can hear pretty loud "clicks" every 15 to 40 seconds or so.

Yesterday, everyone and their brother was posting about this "new" revelation about a possible Apple-branded remote control for AirTunes that was found in an iTunes 4.8 error message.
In this context, the phrase "AirTunes remote control" clearly refers to remotely controlling AirTunes from iTunes, due to the lack of an article specifying an actual AirTunes remote control.
The only way that this doesn't refer to an actual remote control and instead to remotely controlling AirTunes via iTunes is if the person writing the error message had a horrible grasp of the English language, yet decided to rewrite a perfectly-acceptable error message anyway.
