Airbus is developing a novel on-board lifter for its A300-600ST Beluga outsize-freighter as part of its proposal to meet the Royal Air Force Short Term Strategic Airlifter (STSA) requirement.
Airbus needed to replace it's aging fleet of Super Guppys used to ferry subassemblies (wings, fuselages) between the partner factories.
Airbus Industrie might require such an aircraft, if large components for the projected A3XX (550 to about 800 seat transport, to fly in some 6 years) are to be transported by air.

The Airbus A300 is a short to medium range widebody aircraft.
Airbus partners employed the latest technology, some derived from the Concorde.
The basic fuselage of the A300 was later stretched (A330 and A340), shrunk (A310), or modified into derivatives (Airbus Beluga).

Airbus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name "Airbus" was taken from a non-proprietary term used by the airline industry in the 1960s to refer to a commercial aircraft of a certain size and range, for this term was acceptable to the French linguistically.
In January 1999 Airbus established a separate company, Airbus Military S.A.S., to undertake development and production of a turboprop powered military transport aircraft (the Airbus Military A400M.) The A400M is being developed by several NATO members, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Turkey, and the UK, as an alternative to the C-130 Hercules.
Airbus would ideally like the A350 programme to be launched with the help of state loans covering a third of the development costs although it has stated it will launch without these loans if required.

 NationMaster.com - Encyclopedia: Airbus A300
The Airbus A300-600ST or Beluga is a version of the standard Airbus A300 wide-body airliner, modified to carry aircraft parts and over-sized or awkward cargo.
Airbus, however, is unique in that it is a consortium formed by the major French, British, German, and Spanish aerospace companies, and the geographic location of Airbus manufacturing is not merely a matter of cost and convenience, it is also a matter of history, national interest and pride.
The starting point was a standard wide-body twin-engined Airbus A300: the wings, engines, landing gear, and the lower part of the fuselage were retained, the upper part of the fuselage replaced with an enormous horseshoe-shaped structure 7.7 metres in diameter.

 Airbus A300
The Airbus A300 is a short to medium range, wide-body family of aircraft manufactured by Airbus Industrie between 1972 and the present.
After the initial flurry of the launch, sales of the A300 were weak for some years, with most orders going to airlines that had an obligation to order the locally-made product - notably Air France and Lufthansa.
It is unlikely that many more will be sold: the A300 is reaching the end of its market life and is mainly sold as a dedicated freighter now.

The ninth Airbus, which was built, was the first airplane of the long-distance series of A300s B-4.
Some months late the Airbus A300 was then increased, and on 28 June 1973 the first flight of a stretched B2 and B4-Version started.
Doubts expressed however the pilots' associations, which faced the Airbus A300 initially rather rejecting, which one could explain oneself possibly with the fact that the A300 was at that time, at these times a genuine revolution - times somewhat new, compared with the proven airplanes of Boeing.

The A300 and A310 are in service with more than 80 operators worldwide, ranging from scheduled or charter airlines, to freight carriers and military transports.

The Airbus partners are able to save two thirds in transport costs, because the Belugas run far more economically.
The question remains as to whether the Airbus partners would have had the will and indeed the finances, to support the high ambitions of the former SATIC boss.

Airbus should be required to modify its flight control system on a popular wide-body aircraft to reduce the potential for dangerous rudder movements at high speed, US safety investigators said Friday.

Airbus spokeswoman Mary Anne Greczyn said the company was fully behind the recommended change, but did not have a cost estimate for the work.
