The Airbus A318, also known as the "Mini-Airbus," is a smaller version of the Airbus A320 aircraft, six meters shorter and 14 tons lighter than its predecessor.
The A318 has one major disadvantage when compared to other A320 variants: its cargo doors are too small to accommodate standard air freight containers, making it nearly useless for carrying large inanimate objects.
While Airbus was hoping to market the A318 as a regional jet alternative, laws in both the U.S. and Europe have kept it in the same class as larger aircraft for calculating landing fees and the like, so regional operators haven't touched it.

 AeroWorldNet(tm)-Farnborough '98 Daily Headline News
Airbus says it expects to dominate more than half the market of the 100-seat aircraft, which the European manufacturing consortium estimates to be around 1,000 aircraft, with the A318.
Airbus hinges much of its competitive success with its new 100-seater on the capabilities of its wing, which the European manufacturer says makes the A318 6% more efficient than the Boeing 737-600 and 28% more than the 717-200.
The A318 is similar to the A319 with three rows removed from behind the wing and the equivalent of 1.5 rows in front removed in order for the airplane to keep the same clearance form the nacelle to the cargo door.

Scheduled for certification next June, the first A318 took to the air for the first time on January 15, but instead of drawing the usual fanfare reserved for such occasions, the milestone flight served to highlight mistakes made in the design of its original 22,000-lb-thrust engines.
The first A318 burned some six percent more fuel than original estimates, a discovery that forced Airbus to completely revamp its certification schedule to accommodate the approval first of a version powered by CFM56-5s.
Airbus originally planned to deliver the first A318 powered by PW6000s to International Lease Finance Co. (ILFC) by the end of this year.

The development of the A318 started with a cooperation between Airbus, Alenia, and the chinese company AVIC in the year of 1997.
The identical structure of the A318 with the other models of the A320 family has the advantage that every pilot who is qualified to fly an A320 model, is also able to fly the A318.
This concept is Airbus' s trump, since the aircraft is a lot less profitable to operate than the new pure regional jets.

Airbus had intended to deliver PW6000-powered A318s this summer, but when the Pratt and Whitney engine came up 5-10% over in anticipated fuel burn, the introduction was delayed until late 2005--some 2.5 years late--while the engine manufacturer redesigned the compressor for the 23,800-lb.-thrust-class engine.
The A318 is some 20 ft. (6.1 meters) shorter than the A320, the baseline aircraft for the family of single-aisle aircraft.
Airbus officials say the A318 was developed at the request of A320-series owners who wanted smaller aircraft for use in their own operations as well as for more regional-type flying.

Airbus A318   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
By March 1, Airbus had delivered nine of the airplanes–four of five to Frontier and five of 15 to European launch customer Air France.
The first A318 prototype flew its maiden voyage on Jan. 15, 2002, but instead of drawing the usual fanfare reserved for such festive occasions, the milestone flight served to highlight mistakes made in the design of the 22,000-pound-thrust Pratt engines.
The source of the fuel-efficiency problem in the Pratt and Whitney-powered A318 stemmed from an ambition to lighten and simplify the engine by minimizing the number of stages in the high-pressure compressor.

Stuart said Airbus had considered the CFM models initially because of the desire expressed by Air France and other operators of CFM-powered A320 family models to keep engine commonality with existing fleets.
The Airbus answer to Boeing's assertion that the 717 is about six tons lighter than the A318 is that the technological package on board the A318 matters more to airline customers in the grand scheme of things than takeoff weight.
There is a $15 million difference between adding an A318 to a fleet of A320 family aircraft than by adding a 717, Stuart said, giving due credit to the projected efficiencies of the PW6000 engine.

BA order for A318s seen as blow to Boeing - Oct. 11, 1999
LONDON (CNNfn) - British Airways Plc said Monday it was buying 12 Airbus Industrie A318 planes worth about $470 million, dealing a blow to Boeing's hopes of winning a foothold in the market for smaller, 100-seat jets.
The A318, the smallest in that family, shares some features with bigger Airbus planes, which should help lower maintenance costs at the carrier and gave Airbus the advantage in the small-plane order, analysts said.
Airbus aircraft are also designed with similar cockpits, cutting down on pilot training costs and providing more flexibility for a carrier when scheduling flight crews.
