Airbus A340 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Airbus A340 is a long-range four-engined widebody commercial passenger airplane manufactured by Airbus.
The first published studies for the A340 were as the TA11 in 1981, in the November issue of Air International (coinciding with the display of the A300 at that year's Farnborough Air Show).
Airbus' engineers designed the A340 in parallel with the twin-engined A330: both aircraft share the same wing and similar fuselage structure, and borrow heavily from the advanced avionics developed for the A320.

Airbus Beluga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Airbus A300-600ST (Super Transporter) or Beluga is a version of the standard Airbus A300 wide-body airliner, modified to carry aircraft parts and over-sized or awkward cargo.
Airbus, however, is unique in that it is a consortium formed by the major French, British, German, and Spanish aerospace companies, and the geographic location of Airbus manufacturing is not merely a matter of cost and convenience, it is also a matter of history, national interest and pride.
The starting point was the design for the wide-body twin-engined Airbus A300: the wings, engines, landing gear, and the lower part of the fuselage are the same as the A300 while the upper part of the fuselage is an enormous horseshoe-shaped structure 7.7 metres in diameter.

A340 cabin offers a large pallet of options permitting airlines to customise and adapt their cabin to the specifics of their market.
The advantages of Airbus A340 Family operation are benefiting from Airbus exceptional system of operational commonality that can reduce training time and costs for pilots and maintenance teams; its four-engine configuration facilitates operational planning over shortened long and ultra-long range routes and offers airlines the ability to open up new routes.

The Airbus A340 is a long-range widebody commercial passenger airplane manufactured by Airbus.
Airbus' new aircraft was launched in 1988 as a long-range complement to the short-range A320 and the medium-range A300.
At the time, the newest long-range widebody (the twinjet Boeing 767) was at a disadvantage against aircraft such as the 747 because of the ETOPS problem: two-engined aircraft have to stay within close range of emergency airfields in case one of their engines malfunctions.

Flying the Longest-Range Airplane in Production--The Airbus A340-500
The newest versions of the A340, the -500 and -600, are not just lengthened and strengthened airplanes; they have been redesigned in critical areas to provide a significant increase in range.
Airbus began developing plans for this airplane by adding a wing box insert to previous A340 designs, which increases the chord of the wing by three full frames, or 5.6 feet, at the fuselage, tapering to the wingtip.
Airbus asked Rolls Royce to develop a new engine, the RR Trent 500, rated at 56,000 lbs thrust for the A340-600, and 53,000 lbs of thrust for the A340-500.

The reason why the Airbus A340-500 and A340-600 have outsold the Boeing 777-200LR and Boeing 777-300LR is probably because the Airbuses have 4 engines but overall, Boeing 777s (all models) have already made a sale lead over the A340, particularly in the hotly contested Asian market.
