The Airbus A350 is a long-range, mid-sized, widebody family of airliners currently under development, designed to compete with the Boeing 777 and 787.
Airbus refers to this as "XWB" or "Xtra Wide Body" and states that from the point of view of a seated passenger, the cabin is 5 inches wider at eye level than the competing Boeing 787.
Airbus intends for the A350 XWB to compete with both the Boeing 787 and its larger cousin, the Boeing 777.

 Airbus Relaunches A350
Airbus is scrapping its original plans for the new A350 and plans to relaunch the program as a completely new range of aircraft that moves further into Boeing 777's market territory.
The relaunched A350 is bigger than the original aircraft and is being pitched both against the Boeing 787 and 777.
Airbus claims the A350-900s block fuel consumption per seat will be 7% better than that of the 787-9 and 30% better than the 777-200ER's.

Airbus is aiming to cut maintenance costs on the A350 to around ten percent lower than on the A330.
With the A350, Airbus is aiming for the top end of the capacity of the 7E7 family, in which the Asian airlines are especially interested.

Airbus' Broughton plant is now one of the largest factories in the UK UK defence and aerospace group BAE Systems has confirmed it is in discussions to sell its 20% stake in European aircraft-maker Airbus.
As well as the staff directly employed by Airbus in Britain, as many as 135,000 jobs at UK suppliers are thought to depend on it.
Airbus sold a record 1,055 planes last year, giving it a larger share of new orders than US rival Boeing.

On November 23, Airbus chief executive Noel Forgeard declared the was “reasonably optimistic” that the EADS board would approve the launch of the new programme and that the A350 would enter service a year after the Boeing 7E7.
Airbus claimed that many customers had already expressed their interest in these new models and contributed to their definition.

Deliveries of Qatar Airways' Airbus A350-800s are due to begin in the third quarter of 2010, with those of its A350-900s starting several months later.
Qatar Airways, a customer for the A380, is the largest all-Airbus operator in the Middle East, with a fleet that comprises aircraft from the A320, A300/A310 and A330/A340 families.
Although Airbus will be delighted with this large order on the first day of the Paris Air show, the company will also be disappointed with Emirates' decision not to announce any orders at the show.

Before the Paris Air Show, Airbus' only A350 deals were an order for 10 planes by Air Europa, a small Spanish carrier, and a pledge by US Airways and America West (AWA) to order 20 aircraft in exchange for a $250 million loan from Airbus to the two carriers as they prepare to merge.
To lure customers, Airbus went back to the drawing board on the A350, which was originally meant as a modest upgrade of the existing A330.
With Airbus and Boeing both projecting a worldwide market for 3,500 midsize jets over the next 20 years, the competition between the 787 and A350 is only beginning.

Airbus plans to decide on possible changes to its future A350 mid-sized aircraft by mid-2006 following complaints from customers, Airbus head Gustav Humbert said.
Important Airbus customers including Singapore Airlines have criticized Airbus for not doing enough to make the A350 competitive with Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, which has sold out the first three years of production.
Airbus was not currently working on a successor to the successful A320 family of short-haul aircraft, Humbert said.

The new member of the Airbus family was approved by Airbus shareholders European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, which owns 80 percent, and BAE Systems of Britain, with a 20 percent stake.
Following the go-ahead, Airbus chief executive Noel Forgeard said in late December that he would seek reimbursable advances from participating countries of a maximum 33 percent of the total investment.
