Airchain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In broadcast engineering for radio, the airchain (sometimes air chain (US) or just chain (UK)) is the path or route an audio or video signal takes on its way through a radio station or television station.
The airchain begins with microphones, CD players, turntables, telephone hybrids, video tape recorders, satellite and other remote feeds, and other input devices in the studio and control room.
The airchain may be all-analogue, all-digital, or most likely some hybrid of the two.

Ok, I want an airchain that sounds like an Optimod or Omnia soundprocessor but I don't have that much money to spend...
I've been working on a solution for this question in the last 4 years: An Airchain build out of Direct-x plugins.
Now, in 2004, I am some sort of satisfied with the results (I doubt if I will ever be fully satisfied) and therefore willing to share my airchain to the rest of the world.

Comrex Tech Notes: Thoughts on Digital Audio Data Reduction and the Dueling Algorithm Controversy
The only sane reason to install a system into your airchain which actually adds noise is, of course, for cost benefit.
In the broadcast airchain, enough devices remain analog in nature that some conversions are inevitable, e.g.
We believe it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to make his customer aware of the pitfalls of multiple data reductions in his airchain.

As many as four airchains are used at any given time, although more outputs are available.
The flexible audio routing presented a challenge to the facility to ensure that the control and status of each delay unit was provided and displayed to the appropriate talent, producer and board-op position.
SAS designed a logic system to analyze which airchain is being fed from each surface, and then route the appropriate status and control to the proper positions.

Australian materials handling and logistics specialist ICA is now designing, manufacturing and installing a new cost-efficient technology for bulk loading (and unloading) of palletised product into shipping containers.
This development bolsters the company’s existing suite of dock loading systems that include the Airlift, Airola, Airchain and Transkate systems that comprehensively utilise trucks at the delivery points.
With the new technology, the vehicle/container is raised to a correct height to enable efficient loading (and unloading) with powered docks.

Managing Director of ICA, Don Erskine, says this affordable range of solutions is not only tough and reliable, it is applicable to almost any industry and positively impacts the user's bottom line.
Making the task fast and safe, the Airchain is suitable for selective loading and unloading by one operator and it dispenses the need for a forklift.
Incorporating the extremely cost efficient Airola and Airchain modules, the Automated Dock Loading system efficiently handles pre-assembled bulk and palletised cargo.

Broadcasting - What is a Broadcast
A broadcast may be distributed through several physical means.
If coming directly from the studio at a single broadcast station, it is simply sent through the airchain to the transmitter.
Programming may also come through a communications satellite, played either live or recorded for later transmission.

 SAS : Air America Radio
Talk Radio demands delay to protect against profanity or even talent saying the "wrong thing." The AAR system utilizes a separate delay for each of the four airchains.
But to give talent, producers and board ops DELAY DUMP buttons for four separate airchains is really inviting a train wreck.
SAS designed an extensive logic system that analyzes, for each talent position, each producer position, and each board op, which airchain is being fed, and routes delay dump control to the associated airchain delay machine, and at the same time, routes delay safe status to the LED in the associated DELAY DUMP button.

Remote broadcast - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In broadcast engineering, a remote broadcast (usually just called a remote or a live remote) is broadcasting done from a location away from the regular studio.
A remote pickup unit (RPU) is usually used to transmit the audio and/or video back to the station, where it joins the normal airchain.
Other methods include satellite trucks, and even regular telephone lines if necessary.

Radio mixes - studio processing? - Wave Music Community Board
Add in some composite clipping (don't ask), and there you have that "radio" sound you're hearing on those tapes.
You could get some approximation of this sound with some of the digital plug-ins (chained together to simulate the kind of broadcast airchain I described above)...the multiband compression in particular will help even out the "sound" between different songs.
I personally don't feel that most of the current plug-ins sound very good compared to the older analog hardware (at least in terms of the actual processing activity....designing good-sounding algorithms either analog or digital is really an artform as much as science).

Consider that it is likely stereo listening will comprise the lion's share of the audience for some time, if not always, so some engineers object to causing this potential problem for the majority of the audience, simply for the sake of a probable permanent minority of surround listeners.
As a reaction to this, the parametric surround camp has developed an artistic downmix option, by which a dedicated stereo mix can be injected into the broadcast downstream of the parametric steering signal generation in the airchain, so the stereo listener hears the "regular" stereo mix.
But this can foil the surround decoding, thus potentially defeating the whole point of the process.
