 TSB Reports - Air 1999 - A99P0168
The Aircoupe's flight path from Pitt Meadows to CYA 125 (T) was reconstructed from information gathered from ground witnesses, ultralight aircraft pilots airborne in the area at the time, ATC radar and communication records, and flight performance data of the two accident aircraft.
This reconstruction shows that the Aircoupe's flight path was direct from the circuit at Pitt Meadows, south into the northeast corner of CYA 125 (T), where the Aircoupe met an ultralight aircraft at 1624:30 and carried out an orbiting manoeuvre around it.
Collision damage patterns suggest that the Aircoupe was in a slight climbing, right-bank attitude at impact, consistent with a turn away from the Cessna.

Aviation Safety Letter 1/2002   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The Aircoupe pilot was very familiar with the local area, and the Cessna 152 instructor was properly qualified for the flight.
The Aircoupe pilot's attention was probably focused on manoeuvring around the ultralight, whereas the attention of the Cessna pilots was likely focused on the training environment.
The Aircoupe would have appeared motionless to them for about ten seconds because of their constant relative bearing, which commenced when the aircraft speeds and headings combined to establish the collision course.

The Aircoupe is a two-place, low wing monoplane of all metal construction.
The Aircoupe was available from the factory with the conventional three-control system or with the coordinated controls.
With the coordinated controls, the ailerons, rudders, and nose wheel are mechanically coordinated so that turns, both in the air and on the ground, are made by turning the control wheel right or left; the same wheel moved fore and aft controls the elevator.

The airplane known as the Aircoupe was designed by aeronautical engineer Fred Weick (later responsible for the Piper Cherokee), in the late 1930's as the first non-spinnable aircraft, intended for the non-professional pilot.
Briefly, between 1960 and 1963 the rights to the Aircoupe aircraft were held by the Air Products Company of the City of Carlsbad, New Mexico.
After merging with the Mooney Aircraft Corporation of Kerrville, Texas in 1968 two twin-tail models of the Aircoupe were introduced.

The Ultimate ERCO Ercoupe - American History Information Guide and Reference
The Aircraft Type Certificate for the Ercoupe passed from ERCO to Forney, then to the city of Carlsbad, New Mexico, then to Alon (which manufactured the aircraft as the Aircoupe), and to Mooney and finally rests with Univair Aricraft Corporation of Colorado.
Mooney was the last company to actively manufacture the aircraft, as Univair only supplies parts and support.
Early Ercoupes were powered with 65 hp (48 kW) A-65 Continental 4-cylinder engines, with the final versions of the Aircoupe being powered by 90hp Continental C90-16F engines also of 4 cylinders.
