EAA JOINS EFFORT TO KEEP OLDER GENERAL AVIATION AIRCRAFT FLYING SAFELY
During a summit on the airworthiness of older aircraft, sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at Kansas City, MO, EAA founder Paul Poberezny and Earl Lawrence, EAA’s Executive Director of Government Programs, represented the association in extensive discussions regarding issues facing that general aviation fleet.
The average age of factory-built general aviation aircraft is now 34 years and is expected to rise to 41 years by the year 2009.
FAA sought input from aviation organizations, manufacturers and type clubs regarding this situation, which occurred when few general aviation aircraft were built from the early 1980s until the mid-1990s.

 Riveting: Science or Art?
When data is not available, particularly for older aircraft where the manufacturer no longer is in business, the current version of FAA Advisory Circular 43-13 is the textbook on aircraft repair, including information and standards for riveting.
Aircraft type clubs for specific makes and models of aircraft are great sources of information for older aircraft.
According to AC 43-13-1B, in aircraft manufacturing and repair, the most common rivets are standard solid-shank aluminum rivets with a universal head.

Type data/specification sheets: The aircraft’s type certificate data or specification sheet is in reality the aircraft’s birth certificate.
Over the years, I have dealt with several of these organizations and I am pleased to report that these folks know their aircraft inside and out and are quite happy to provide mechanics and owners with an easy access to all available data on their particular aircraft.

Work groups report on aging aircraft
Kim Smith, manager of the FAA’s Small Aircraft Directorate, told the gathering that the FAA’s goal is to keep aging airplanes flying safely, not to stop them from flying.
She also emphasized that the FAA is looking for grassroots solutions to problems facing aging aircraft.
They might affect a 5-year-old aircraft, he added, and might not be present in a 70-year-old aircraft.

Plane & Pilot Magazine | How To Keep Older Aircraft Flying
Through diligent upkeep, the support of type clubs, and field approvals to install modern, improved parts, owners have played a significant role in extending the lives of airplanes that weren’t designed to fly after 50, 60 or even 70 years.
Except for owners who use older aircraft for commercial purposes such as ride hopping or flight exhibition, this would be a small price to pay for the proposed benefits.
Stressing that he was speaking as an aircraft owner, and not officially for his company or its underwriters, Joyce asserts, “My personal opinion of the proposal as it was presented is that I don’t see a problem with it as an insurance issue.

 1939 Luscombe 8A
Don A. Luscombe became interested in aircraft while serving in France during World War I. In the 1920s, he was instrumental in developing the Monocoupe line of aircraft which first appeared in 1927.
The Luscombe Model 8 is a side-by-side two-place, high-wing aircraft of all-metal construction (except for fabric wing covering in earlier models).
This is the first light aircraft to use monocoque construction (where the metal skin of the airplane carries the load instead of an internal framework).

These groups wanted an aircraft with a low wing-loading that pilots and students could easily operate from small airfields.
Instructors would introduce students to flying and guide them through their primary flight training in the 2-22, then turn them loose to hone their new flying skills at the controls of the 1-19.
Thousands of people acquired the skill to fly motorless aircraft at the controls of the 2-22 and many of these airplanes remain active in 2003.

The Cessna 140 is usually powered by an 85 or 90 horsepower (63 or 67 kW) piston engine, and has a metal fuselage and fabric wings with metal control surfaces.
It had the same engine as the 140, but it did not have flaps, and the cabin side "D" windows and electrical system (radio, lights, battery and starter) were optional.
Common modifications to the Cessna 120 and 140 include "metalized" wings, whereby the fabric is replaced with sheet aluminum and the installation of landing gear extenders to reduce the tendency of the aircraft to nose-over on application of heavy braking.

In the case of the MU-2 I have spent many hours researching the aircraft's safety record, and the possible reasons for the fact that it crashes at roughly twice the rate (number of aircraft flying divided by the number of aircraft crashed) of any other GA twin.
What the AOPA and most of the supporters of the MU-2 either ignore or fail to realize, is that there are two issues with the aircraft that have caused the pressure from a number of members of Congress to ask the FAA to reevaluate the aircraft.
Those pilots who have died in crashes, many of who were relatively high time, experienced pilots, many of whom had received training from Flight Safety, are not able to defend themselves against this slander against their reputations.
