 World War 2 1939-1945 - www.1939to1945.com
The Versailles Treaty of June 1919 required from Germany the surrender of all her considerable residue of World War I aircraft and aero-engines, and expressly forbade her either to manufacture new military types or to subsidise the construction of aircraft of any kind.
The first-line aircraft strength of the R.A.F. in 1933 – two years before the Luftwaffe was ‘formed’ – was 850 aircraft; a series of re-equipment plans aimed ultimately to increase this figure to 3,550, with nearly another 6,000 aircraft in reserve.
The front-line aircraft in service at that time, although numerically greater than those ranged against them by the Luftwaffe, were inferior technically, and this, coupled with the element of surprise in the German attack, led to their initial defeat by the enemy.

The United States did not produce any aircraft of its own design for use at the front during World War I. Nevertheless, the war served as an impetus for the infant industry and gave several aircraft companies their start.
And in spite of their best efforts, compared to the total number of aircraft used in the war, the number of DH-4s produced in the United States and shipped to Europe was small.

 World War Two Aircraft
The Navy's Fighting Squadrons in World War Two changed frequently, and have always confused me. Based on Barrett Tillman's excellent book, I have prepared this summary table for them, showing deployments, CO, top ace, carrier, and number of aces.
This book covers in detail the eleven U.S. fighter aircraft types produced just before and during World War II - with a combined production total of just over 100,000 aircraft.
This study concludes with comparisons of the eleven types in terms of program milestones, aircraft drag, power available at various altitudes, speed, climb, rolling and turning, acceleration, and diving performance, as well as general evaluations by World War II pilots.

During World War I, some aircraft manufacturers turned to this configuration in an effort to gain extra maneuverability for fighter aircraft, at a penalty of greater drag and therefore lower speed.
Sopwith Triplane was the first triplane to see service during World War I, but by far, the best-known example of a triplane is the Fokker Dr.I, immortalised as the aircraft most closely identified with Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron".
Recently, the term "tandem triplane" has been used for recent jet fighter aircraft that have canards in addition to normal flying surfaces (main wings and horizontal tailplanes) for increased manouverablility and/or increased lift for short takeoffs or landings.
