 Japanese Navy Ships--Hosho (Aircraft Carrier, 1922-1947)
She was originally completed with an "island" on her starboard side, but this was removed in 1923.
By the beginning of the Pacific War, Hosho had been relegated to training duties, but was used in a combat role during the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
On the morning of 5 June, one of Hosho's planes photographed the crippled aircraft carrier Hiryu shortly before that ship sank.

Each aircraft was equipped with a raised instructor's seat, a new standardized cockpit layout in both front and rear, increased fuel tankage, square tipped propellers, and F-51 Mustang-type landing gear and tail wheel.

The first five aircraft were produced in such a hurry that they were built with the armament in mock-up form, and were used to test and improve the concept of the Pe-2.
The Pe-2 was inadequately defended in the rear quarter of the aircraft.
The aircraft was 37 to 40 Mph (60 to 65 km/h) faster at medium altitudes, but since the rocket engine had only a brief endurance and was unreliable the aircraft was never produced in series.

This required Sidney Camm, who was chief designer at Hawkers, to provide a design of an all-metal structured aircraft, the Tomtit.
This had a Cirrus engine fitted, although later one aircraft was converted to having a Wolseley A.R.7.
It is probable that more Tomtits could have been sold, as it was very well received by their pilots, but Hawkers were heavily involved in the production of the Hawker Hart.
