Nondestructive Testing Keeps Bagram Aircraft Flying
One of those teams is the nondestructive inspection or team, part of the 455th Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron.
Nondestructive inspection, or NDI, is a program the Air Force uses to ensure the durability of structural parts and components of aircraft without destroying the part and, in some cases, without removing the part from the aircraft.
If the part to be tested cannot be removed from the aircraft, it is done on the aircraft.

  Parts of Airplane
The hinged part of the vertical stabilizer is called the rudder; it is used to deflect the tail to the left and right as viewed from the front of the fuselage.
The hinged part of the horizontal stabilizer is called the elevator; it is used to deflect the tail up and down.
The outboard hinged part of the wing is called the aileron; it is used to roll the wings from side to side.

 Aircraft production - Part 4
The 864,000 aircraft produced during WWII fell into three major categories: 39% were fighters, 32% were bombers and other air-to-ground combat aircraft, while the remainding 29% were non-combat aircraft such as trainers, reconnaissance aircraft and transports.
The proportion of non-combat aircraft was second highest after the US, and would have been higher still were it not for the large number of training aircraft built in Canada, where many British aircrews conducted part of their training.
Needs for training aircraft were lower than for the western Allies becasue the USSR started with a very large pool of trained aircrew and because most Soviet aircraft were single or two seat aircraft that operated mainly by day.

 Aircraft production - Part 3
This high priority derived in part from the extension to the air force the traditional role of the Royal Navy in protecting the island nation from overseas invaders.
Moreover, the aircraft built by Japan were on average smaller and lighter than those of the other major combatants, so while the country produced 9% of all aircraft, these amounted to just 6% of worldwide production by airframe weight.
By the beginning of the Pacific war in 1941 Japanese aircraft were in some respects among the best in the world, and in the initial stages of the war Allied pilots were amazed at the range, speed and maneuverability of the Zero fighter.

Aircraft parts industry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because of strict regulations on aircraft maintenance in most countries, aircraft parts must often be certified by regulatory agencies, and for this reason are often considerably more expensive than comparable uncertified parts.
The aircraft parts industry is defined as establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing aircraft assemblies, aircraft engine components, equipment and parts.
The military aircraft parts industry is dominated by large aerospace and defence conglomerates in a small number of large, industrial countries such as the United States, France and the United Kingdom.

CALLING IT BY THE NUMBERS: AIRCRAFT PART CERTIFICATION
FAR Part 145 (114 C.F.R. Part 145) imposes requirements for the issuance of repair station certificates and associated ratings and prescribes general operating rules for facilities engaged in the maintenance and alteration of aircraft, parts, components and appliances.
Parts for which approval cannot be established should be disposed of to prevent their installation or reentry into aviation inventories.
Uti1ization of parts by air carriers or repair stations for which approval cannot be substantiated could have adverse safety implications, will be in violation of pertinent federal laws and regulations and will subject air carriers or repair stations, its officers and employees to serious and even severe legal consequences.

The Unappreciated and Ill Defined Aircraft Maintenance Log   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
We have established that the aircraft's maintenance logs are not a part of the aircraft.
If your aircraft has timed parts, and all aircraft do, it may be necessary to replace all parts that are undocumented and are in question.
One claims attorney said that although the logs were not technically a part of the aircraft, he would consider them a component and would pay for reconstruction under the aircraft owner's hull policy.

Modeller's Guide to Bell X-1 Experimental Aircraft (Part One)
Bell Aircraft Co. in Buffalo, NY was awarded a contract for three prototype aircraft in March 1945.
The horizontal tail was mounted high on the fin to avoid it being affected by the turbulence from the wing.
Because of that it was strictly forbidden to land the aircraft with remaining fuel onboard; provision was made to jettison fuel in the air.

 FAR Part 1
"Aircraft" means a device that is used or intended to be used for flight in the air.
"Appliance" means any instrument, mechanism, equipment, part, apparatus, appurtenance, or accessory, including communications equipment, that is used or intended to be used in operating or controlling an aircraft in flight, is installed in or attached to the aircraft, and is not part of an airframe, engine, or propeller.
"Powered-lift" means a heavier-than-air aircraft capable of vertical takeoff, vertical landing, and low speed flight that depends principally on engine- driven lift devices or engine thrust for lift during these flight regimes and on nonrotating airfoil(s) for lift during horizontal flight.

Compositesworld.com - Aircraft Repair Can And Should Be Automated - May 2006   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Any way you slice it, composite aircraft parts are getting older, accumulating the effects of FOD (foreign object damage), withstanding the ravages of environmental exposure, and bearing operating loads not always as designed.
Repair stations are full of composite parts, and a wide range of military and civil aircraft are on the ground, in need of repair or part replacement before they can return to service.
Automation of repair processes is a tall order, but as discussed at the meeting, advancing technology now enables automation of challenging composite aircraft part repairs in dedicated workcells, despite the inevitable variability between in-service parts and their individual histories.

 Owner Produced Parts
It's ironic, the aircraft owner can produce a part for their aircraft but the owner can not install the part; the AandP or avionics shop can not produce a part for the aircraft but can install the owners produced part or any other legal part.
A part can be installed by a qualified person in the course of a repair for the purpose of returning a Type Certificate part to service (if that part isn’t for sale as a separate part).
Yes, IF the part you produced has all the “characteristics” of the approved part it’s replacing, the part is installed on the Owner’s Aircraft only but an approved person, then the part is considered FAA Approved once the AandP/radio shop installs the part and enters the data into the aircraft records.

Saratoga was detached from the main force, and with an escorting cruiser, was sent on a wide southward sweep before turning north to approach within striking distance of her target, the Panama Canal.
On the morning of the 26th, while it was still dark, she launched a strike group of 69 aircraft which arrived over the target undetected shortly after dawn and completed the theoretical destruction of the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks without opposition.
All carrier aircraft, based on these tests, were equipped with brakes and wheel type tail skids.

 NBAA > Part 135 Resources
Part 135 air carriers and aircraft owners who have placed their aircraft on a charter certificate continue to await the release of the final version of operations specification (OpSpec) A008 addressing operational control.
Most aircraft available for charter are not owned by the charter operator; instead, the aircraft are made available to the charter operator for its use via a lease or a use agreement.
NBAA urges all Part 135 certificate holders to review their flight release procedures and anti-ice/de-ice programs to ensure they are in full compliance with FAA regulations and guidance.

Though several flights and wind tunnel tests the aircraft were made the 302 never took to the air under its own power.

Regardless of variant, the first two aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2012, and a limited initial operational capability to be achieved by the end of 2014.

In this method aircraft take-off's are catapult-assisted, allowing very heavy payloads to be carried, while special arrestor gear equipment is used to halt fast moving landing aircraft in a relatively short distance.
