Topic: Airdrie and Shotts (UK Parliament constituency)

Airdrie and Shotts (UK Parliament constituency) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Airdrie and Shotts is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
A similar constituency, also called Airdrie and Shotts, is used by the Scottish Parliament.
Small semi-urban towns such as Stane, Dykehead and Shotts were added to Airdrie in the 1990s redistribution to form this seat, the predecessor of which was Monklands East.

The new Airdrie & Shotts seat consists of Airdrie from the old Monklands East seat with the addition of Shotts area from Motherwell North.
Monklandsgate consisted of allegations of sectarianism spending discrepancies between Protestant Airdrie and Catholic Coatbridge fuelled by the fact that all 17 of the ruling Labour group were Roman Catholics.
The accusations were of increased interest to the media as the Monklands West MP was Tom Clarke, former Monklands District Provost and onetime Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, while the Monklands East MP was the Labour leader, John Smith.

Hill & Knowlton UK Election Watch 2005
The periodic changes to parliamentary constituencies south of the border are on their way, but will not occur until the election 2009/10 so for now the number of seats in the Commons will be reduced from 659 to 646, with the figure required for an overall majority falling to 324 seats.
The Boundary Commission of Scotland's work in reducing the number of constituencies now means that electorates in most seats have increased to the average size of electorates in England, at least for the time being, and goes someway to answering the critics who point to Scotland's disproportionate presence in the UK Parliament.
Some sitting Members of Parliament, faced with the prospect of a contest with parliamentary colleagues to become the party's candidate in a new seat, decided that discretion was the better part of valour' and chose to stand down.

He entered parliament in 1987 as MP for the Motherwell North constituency (later renamed Hamilton North and Bellshill).
