BBC NEWS | Magazine | 'Airfix made me the man I am'
Although Airfix were the market leaders (their first kit was a Spitfire, launched in 1955), they became a sort of generic name for any plastic, injection-moulded model kit - usually of some kind of military machine.
Airfix was as popular in the United States, France and Germany (where the swastika transfers on Heinkels and Messerschmitts were banned).
Airfix was not only aeroplanes and soldiers, I remember many hours spent painting "jewels and velvet" as I made King Henry VIII and other historical characters.

The overall effect of the graphics in Airfix Dogfighter is the whimsical portrayal of mock battles in an environment suitable for the whole family.
Airfix Dogfighter can hardly be compared to a flight simulator with the mild exception of the fact that the basic aeronautical controls tend to behave similarly.

Airfix was bought by Palitoy, a division of General Mills, and production was moved to France, where one of General Mills' subsidiaries still made Meccano.
Airfix makes a wide range of models, although it has been a long time since they were on sale in great numbers in general toyshops; the internet has been handy for Airfix fans, and the company has a website.

Whereas the advantage of Airfix now being part of an established company like Hornby, is that they have an existing infrastructure and therefore they can now bolt on incremental turnover, without adding significant incremental costs to their business infrastructure.
And if the parent can see the Airfix brand on the kit, or a grandparent can see the Airfix brand and they can remember back to their childhood, that is obviously going to help endorse that product to that generation of buyer.

He is the leading expert on the history of model kits and his first book ‘The Model World of ‘Airfix’ was published in 1984: a slim volume that only told part of the story, but prior to this it has been the standard history of the famous kit manufacturer.
Yes, there are better detailed and more modern kits available in hobby stores today, but the old-fashioned offerings of Airfix, heavy-handed rivet detail, thick canopies and all continue to hold a special place in the hearts of those of us who have been with this hobby for several decades.
Part of the problem is that there are some bits of Airfix history which really aren't worth celebrating but which the author has presumably felt duty bound to include to the detriment of the overall package and it's also very frustrating to find references in the text to kits which aren't illustrated in the book.

BBC/OU Open2.net - Money & Management Blog - Airfix: kit, model or toy?
Researching this piece, I was amazed to discover that the original product concept was not for a kit of parts but for a completed model – in the very first instance, of a Ferguson tractor.
But although the injection-moulded parts were comparatively cheap, assembly added significantly to the costs, and so someone, somewhere, came up with what is now arguably the defining characteristic of an Airfix product – self-assembly from a kit of parts.
Airfix originally prospered at a time when World War II was recent memory and Britain still considered itself an engineering power.
