Mechanics of an Airlift   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The airlift is a simple device designed to remove silt or other overburden from an archaeological site.
The airlift being used for the Monitor excavations is somewhat unique in that it will not be connected to an air hose from the surface.
Pumping air to the airlift through a hose that connects from a surface pump to the lift intake 240 feet below would require the dive boat to remain stationary over the site, which, in our mode of operation, is not possible.

Taylor Devices Fluid Lock-Up Devices -- Technical Paper
The operation of the device is completely passive, yet enables multi-mass structures to be dynamically braced, without resorting to the cost and complexity of an active actuator system.
The earliest successful and documented use of Lock-up Devices known to the author is found in a series of reports by J.H. Walls and E. Schnitzer respectively, published by the U.S. National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) from 1951-1958 [2, 3 and 4].
A Lock-up Device is essentially a form of a very stiff viscous damper, with an orifice so restrictive that virtually no energy is dissipated during a transient event.

 Airlift, by Kevin Thurston
This made the principle of airlift a little more obvious, but it appeared that the bubbles were simply splashing the water back into the aquarium and couldn't possibly be moving much water.
Airlift can be readily understood by considering what happens when a bubble is released in water below the surface.
When the airlift principle is applied to under gravel filters, sponge filters, and inside box filters you have to realize that there's a little more to the story.

 Air Lift Device
The most vulnerable portion of this device is the brass/plastic junction and divers must take care not to over-stress this area.
One method to help stabilize this area is to use two short lengths of Velcro strap to fix the position of the brass assembly in a position parallel to the length of PVC pipe.
The airlift device described in this article is a scaled-down, modified-for-training version of a commercial air lift used by Charles Craw in his business and orientation to commercial diving class.

 New Pump Technology
He explained that in a typical airlift pump, air rises and pushes the effluent along when the air’s buoyancy is greater than the weight of the liquid.
The old airlift method is very reliable, according to Peace, provided the operator maintains an adequate supply of air to the system.
For years, an airlift pump consisted of a vertical tube with 60 percent of its length submerged, and an air supply line entering the vertical tube greater than four pipe diameters from its end.
