An airline is a civilian organisation providing air transport services to fare-paying passengers and/or cargo.
Where an airline has established an engineering base at an airport then there may be considerable economic advantages in using that same airport as a preferred focus (or "hub") for its scheduled flights.
Each operator of a scheduled or charter flight uses a distinct airline call sign when communicating with airports or air traffic control centres.

 Fatal Passenger Event Rate By Airline Since 1970
The following values for each airline includes the number of fatal events since 1970, the Full Loss Equivalent (FLE*) for each airline, the year of the most recent fatal event, the number of flights since 1970, and an estimate of the fatal event rate per million flights.
Unless otherwise stated, the number of fatal events is current as of the revision date at the bottom of the page, but the number of flights is the estimate through the end of 2005.
