Some enlistees are able to choose a particular job, or at least a field before actually joining, others are assigned an AFSC at Basic Training.
After Basic Military Training, new Air Force members attend a technical training school where they learn their particular AFSC.
If the stand-collar coat is selected, it will be the first stand-collar "everyday" uniform to be issued since the 1930's (the Navy's male dress white and the U.S. Marine Corps' dress blue uniform stand-collar coats are worn for formal occasions only).

Furthermore, ANG veteran COL William Campenni, who was a fellow pilot in the 111th FIS at the time, told the Washington Times that Palace Alert was winding down and not accepting new applicants.
After being accepted into the ANG, Airman Basic Bush was selected to attend pilot training even though his test scores were the lowest acceptable for that position.
His six weeks of basic training was completed at Lackland AFB in Texas during July and August of 1968.

Spann Watson recently addressed a group at St. Bonaventure University about his experiences as a WWII airman.
Watson was one of the first Tuskegee Airmen who flew with the 99th Fighter squadron.
While other fighter units had bomber losses as high as 34 percent, the 99th did not lose one bomber during the war.
