Topic: Radio airplay

Music radio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Music radio is a radio format where music is the primary source of broadcast content on both commercial and non-commercial stations.
Music radio, particularly top 40, has often acted as both a barometer and an arbiter of musical taste, and radio airplay is one of the defining measures of success in the mainstream musical world.
The popularity of offshore pirate radio stations in the United Kingdom was an early symptom of frustration with the often overly safe and occasionally politicized playlists of commercial radio.

 Radio Airplay 101, Part I
The biggest advantage of college radio is that it is the easiest and fastest way to get airplay, and with it, the comments, favorite tracks, interviews, and reports in CMJ and other magazines, all of which become great tools to market your band with.
The biggest disadvantage of college radio is that college stations are very difficult for promoters to reach (by phone, when promoting to them), and they have a limited listenership (since they are non- commercial, and have no promotion budget).
The toughest part about working your CD to college radio is that there are so many students running in and out of the station, and there are so many stations which need to be worked, that is becomes very difficult for the promoter to reach the stations.

The First Move: A Content Analysis of National Radio Airplay and Sales Charts
Radio airplay's claims of responsibility for music sales received the bulk of its academic research in the 1940s, when music radio was a new medium.
Radio stations that programmed music continually, like WNYC in New York City, were seen as the exception rather than the rule and thus were able to keep a more mass audience.
If the radio is playing a song that creates an emotional reaction within a listener, he or she could make the decision to purchase that song no matter how many times it has been played.

Wired News: Radio: Where's the Diversity?
Feingold said he will reintroduce legislation this year to ban "the current shakedown system" of payola, bar companies that own both radio stations and concert promoters from using their leverage to bully artists and record labels and strengthen the Federal Communication Commission's radio merger review process.
"Radio is a public medium, and we must ensure that it serves the public good," he said.
Others noted that competing technologies such as webcasting, low-power radio, wireless systems based on the 802.11b standard and emerging satellite radio are all creating new choices for consumers.

When a song is broadcast on one of the monitored stations, the computer searches its "fingerprint" library and notes the exact time and date the station aired the song.

RADIO AIRPLAY 101 - The Overall Picture of Music Marketing
There are two options for your independent music in the music business: You can either try to be your own record label (and/or PR firm, music company, entertainment agent, etc.), or you can partner with others who will do the work for you if you pay them.
The radio portion is what this entire site is about; radio is the most complicated part of the music industry, and the most expensive part of the budget of a major record label.
If you hire an independent radio promoter, they can also help a little with PR, gigs and retail, provided the airplay campaign is large enough.

Get Radio Stations to Play Your Music. Indie Bands, Musician Tips
Note that *servicing* your music to a radio station, and *promoting* your music to a radio station, are not the same thing.
If you are (or have) only one act, and if your intentions are to build a buzz to the point where you can "sign" with someone, then non-commercial radio is probably for you (genre permitting.) Non-commercial radio is very accepting of new acts, and these stations "report" their airplay to the trade magazines readily.
This means that this radio station is going to get all these new listeners, and thus, is going to be paid more.

RADIO AIRPLAY 101 - Commercial Airplay Myths - [Shareware Music Machine News]
The majority of people in the U.S., however, listen to commercial regular-rotation radio, and on these stations, the DJs have no say at all in what is going to be played (unless, in the case of a smaller station, the DJ is also the PD).
Every single song you hear (or every syndicated program you hear) on commercial regular-rotation radio is on that station because of layers of promotion and marketing.
Smaller commercial regular-rotation stations in smaller markets won't make this too much of a sticking point, especially if you have a powerful radio campaign going, or if you are doing great gigs in their city, or if you have great college or specialty/mixshow results.

The majority of people in the U.S. listen to commercial regular-rotation radio, and on these stations, the DJs have no say at all in what is going to be played (unless, in the case of a smaller station, the DJ is also the PD).
The pitfall here is that a listener will hear music on college, and then a month later hear it on commercial, and conclude that the college caused the commercial to happen.

Aleven Music Marketing & Design - Radio Reporting vs. Charting
As you start doing more radio, you'll get more opportunity to choose between "reporting" and "non-reporting" stations, and also between "charting" and "non-charting" campaigns.
A radio campaign is when you work a large group of similar stations at the same time, so as to create a "hit".
So in terms of money, a charting campaign (say, for non-commercial radio) is going to cost about twice what a non-charting campaign would cost.
