The Municipality of Weeze is situated in the Lower Rhine (Niederrhein) region, in the north-western part of North Rhine-Westphalia, and is one of the towns and municipalities of the District of Cleves in the administrative region of Düsseldorf.
The airport in the Municipality of Weeze was formerly home to the Royal Air Force base at RAF Laarbruch between 1954 and 1999.
Weeze is twinned with the town of Watton, Norfolk in England.

 Budget Traveller's Guide to Sleeping in the Dusseldorf airport
The airport really is the middle of nowhere, and I ended up sleeping in a forest about a mile walk from the airport for 3 nights.
We arrived to the nearby village of Weeze (I think) by train to find that there was still around 6 kilometers to the airport and the "taxibus" had just left.
The airport was pretty far from everything so there were just a few passers-by - someone asking if we knew where the police department was and a few others.

 Passenger Opinions about Niederrhein Airport
I am a regular user of the service between niederrhein and prestwick and everytime the attitude of the airport personel upsets me. The check in always starts 10 minutes late than the personel babbles away with each other for another 5 minutes this very upsetting.
The luggage problem when two flights arrive at the same time is another problem people have to wait for their luggage for up to an hour.
None the less, this is a nice airport and well serves the Ruhr area.

There is a private bus shuttle from DUS to Weeze with the bus company that already has a bus shuttle from Frankfurt city to Hahn.
Weeze is ludicrously far from Duesseldorf city centre and a couple of mates of mine came to visit me from the UK when I lived in Duesseldorf.
But due to their new and gentle customer FR airport Weeze now declares to be another Düsseldorf airport.

The new airport at Weeze is advertised as 'Dusseldorf' by Ryanair, the main user of the airport.
I put the city in quotations because Ryanair's Düsseldorf airport, like many of its other airports, is not really very near Düsseldorf at all, but in Weeze, a good 60 minute bus journey away.
In fact I think Weeze may actually be closer to Maastricht in the Netherlands than Düsseldorf, but when prices are as low as on Ryanair, you can't really complain.

Weeze airport is new, and small, so when you come out of the arrivals area, take the nearest exit (they’re not very well signed, but they’re straight ahead) and bear to the right.
Sure enough the taxi came and took us to the airport, but the five minute delay on the train meant we had to fork out €10 for the taxi we shouldn’t have had to if the shuttlebus hadn’t been so ruthless in it’s time accuracy.
Weeze airport is a long way out from Duesseldorf, so allow plenty of time to get between the airport and the centre of Duesseldorf.

We arrived at the airport at 07.45 and there was no desk open so we went for coffee.

The main reasons given were the insufficiant regard of noise issues in the airport certification process.
As an airport it will be much quieter but the NIMBYS will want it turned into a nice park no doubt.
